The role of Steward is a professional vocation.

  • A steward is a member of a ship's crew
  • An individual must be qualified (skilled) to perform the role.

Description (Specifications)

Stewards understand the basic elements of personal service and attend to the needs of passengers aboard a ship. Most people are able to attend to the personal needs of others when necessary but highly skilled Stewards display personal initiative and anticipation of employer needs.

If High Passage passengers are carried aboard a vessel, then a steward is required. There must be at least one steward (who need not be professionally qualified but should have some degree of competency) per eight high passengers on the ship. If there is more than one steward, the most skilled is designated chief steward (or purser) and draws 10% more salary.

Specialist Roles

Servant

The individual has training as a servant, and knows the details of personal service, including meal preparation, domestic duties (cleaning, laundry), and general help.

Executive Assistant

The individual has training and experience as an executive assistant or secretary, and knows the details of service within the business environment, including scheduling, note taking, and correspondence.

History & Background (Dossier)

Stewards typically have good interpersonal skills. Many have talents such as food preparation: the galley is often the private domain of the Steward.

Stewards often work closely with Service Crew, who perform janitorial duties and tasks such as laundry.

Stewards may be streetwise, able to advise passengers on local customs, hazards, or interesting locations. They are in charge of shipboard entertainments and are often skilled at gambling.

Professional Certification

An individual's skill as a Steward is rated by their Certificate:

  • Level 1 (Qualified)
  • Level 2 (Competent)
  • Level 3 (Experienced / Expert)
  • Level 4 or more (Master)
