The Sred*Ni are a technologically advanced Minor Non-Human Race with a Non-humanoid appearance.

Description (Specifications)

The Sred*Ni (pronounced "shred-k-nee") are an arachnid-like mammallianoid life form native to the world I'Sred*Nihil (Beyond 2113) and similar in appearance to the non-sophont Fulacinian Trapper of Fulacin (Spinward Marches 2613).

The head contains a single pair of eyes, a snout-like mouth, and gill-like organs on the "cheeks" that support hearing, smell, and respiration.

Sred*Ni are masters of biotechnology, and individual Sred*Ni often sport enhancements that are at least partially biological. Some genetically engineered biological devices have brains capable of receiving Sred*Ni telepathic input.

Sred*Ni have no concern for individuality as Humans understand it. One consequence of this is that they don't seek to extend their lifespan by technological means. Lifespan appears to vary by caste, with Sages living for more than a standard century and Warriors for less than two decades.

History & Background (Dossier)

The Sred*Ni are fully sentient, although they evidence a communal mind which is telepathically linked and augmented. Due to their mental commonality, the Sred*Ni are unable to recognize and appreciate the subtleties of such concepts as: "free will"; "individuality"; "personal property"; "individual rights and responsibilities"; and similar individual-oriented concepts.

Social Organization: 1105

Sred*Ni society is octamerous, consisting of three i-Zreen ("classes"), subdivided into eight percipiences:

  1. The Tertiary i-Zreen consisting of Breeders and Technicians.
  2. The Secondary i-Zreen of Merchants, Hunters and Warriors.
  3. The Primary i-Zreen consisting of Leaders, Sages and Healers.

Any decision made, in order to be binding to all, must be sponsored and arbitrated by a selected "consciousness" composed of one of each of the latter seven percipiences, Breeders having no decision-making responsibilities. It is not clear to outsiders why the Breeders are excluded from the process, when the equally low-ranking Technicians are not.

Government & Politics (Leadership)

The interstellar polity of the Sred*Ni is known as the I'Sred*Ni Protectorate or I'Sred*Ni Web of Worlds. The governmental center of this polity is a seven-worlded authority known as the I'Sred*Ni Heptad.

Interstellar Relations

First official contact with aliens occurred in -97 with contact between the Corellan League and Sred*Ni at I'Sred*Nispr.

The Treaty of Waypoint was signed at the world now known as Tartakover in 234. Since then, relations between the Protectorate and the Corellan League have been stable if minimal.

The Sred*Ni engage in trade through the ports of Shalukin and Web Edge, leading to the establishment of Protectorate embassies in both systems, Shalukin in 347, and Web Edge in 648 (see: Web Edge Consortium). Exports from their Protectorate are focused on biotechnology products -- medical treatments, bioengineered organisms, etc. -- while goods traded to the Sred*Ni vary, often from month-to-month, from agricultural products, to heavy machinery or -- on rare occasions -- literature and entertainment products. Brokers employed by the Shalukin Consortium need to be part diplomat, part economist, and part seer, trying to anticipate Sred*Ni needs and determine what the race views as a fair exchange.
