The Siyuihwye II class Pirate Ship is an armed and armored starship.

Description (Specifications)

"Siyuihwye II" is an unofficial designation. Officially, some Siyuihwye class Armored Traders received an upgrade kit but remained the same ship class. This upgrade kit sufficiently changed the ships' characteristics, performance, and optimized mission that the AAB recognizes kit-upgraded Siyuihwyes as a different ship class.

From a distance, this ship is indistinguishable from a Siyuihwye class Armored Trader so long as it is not doing any externally perceptible thing the Siyuihwye class is incapable of (primarily, exceeding 2 Gs). The upgrades are all passive (such as the upgraded sensors), hidden (such as the turrets), or internal (such as the extra armor and upgraded power plant; the plant's higher emissions - if being run at full blast - are often the first detectable difference).

Diplomatic advisory: it is the Tlaukhu's official position that all kit-upgraded Siyuihwyes were destroyed during the Uwaralyekose (Aslan Cultural Purge) between -56 and 49, and while some Siyuihwyes have been upgraded since (such as with better turrets) they remain Siyuihwye class Armored Traders and not purpose-designed Pirate Ships. As with many things that are a matter of pride to the Aslan Hierate, caution is advised when expressing disagreement with them on this point where they could issue a challenge, no matter how much evidence there is that the upgrade kits continue to be manufactured and used from time to time. That said, this is an obscure matter that most members of the Aslan Hierate will not have heard of unless and until they have reason to.

It is always possible to say that a Siyuihwye that has been heavily upgraded and engages in piratical activities is still merely a heavily upgraded Siyuihwye, not formally a Siyuihwye II, even if it matches the specifications of a Siyuihwye II and regardless of how exactly it was upgraded. Even the original Aslan designers made this claim - so, arguably, there never have been any Siyuihwye IIs.

Basic Ship Characteristics

Following the Imperial Navy and IISS Universal Ship Profile and data, additional information is presented in the format shown here. [1]

Basic Ship Characteristics [2]
No. Category Remarks
1. Tonnage / Hull Tonnage: 300 tons (standard). 4200 cubic meters. Airframe Wedge Hull.
  • Dimensions: maximum 26 meters long by 30 meters wide by 10 meters tall.
2. Crew Crew: 1 Astrogator, 1 Engineer. 1 virtual Pilot, 1 virtual Sensor Operator, 3 virtual Gunners.
3. Performance Acceleration: 7-G maneuver drive installed.
  • Jump: 2. Can carry enough fuel for 2 jumps.
4. Electronics Model/4 ship computer.
5. Hardpoints 3 hardpoints.
6. Armament Three triple-mount pulse laser turrets.
7. Defenses Heavy armor, high acceleration, and the lasers (in point defense role).
8. Craft None. Vacc suits required for EVA (extra-vehicle activity). Rescue Balls for crew escape normally carried.
9. Fuel Treatment It is normally equipped with a fuel purification plant and fuel scoops.
10. Cost MCr159.5585 standard (no architect's fees, those having been paid off before the Third Imperium existed). MCr143.60265 in quantity. Upgrade kits from a Siyuihwye class Armored Trader cost MCr63 (including labor to install) and were customized for their target, rendering quantity discounts impossible.
11. Construction Time 23 weeks standard, 16 in quantity, if built directly. Almost always converted from a Siyuihwye class Armored Trader instead. Upgrade kit takes 9 weeks to manufacture (usually done in parallel with manufacturing a Siyuihwye class Armored Trader) then 1 week to install.
12. Remarks A pirate ship with a slightly involved manufacturing process, to trick "honest" shipyards into manufacturing most of it. Officially no longer exists.

History & Background (Dossier)

See Siyuihwye class Armored Trader for the origins.

Records of upgrade kit manufacture show that the biosphere was often optimized for the production of mild intoxicants, to keep the crew amused and not bored during jumps - whether on the way to a system to plunder, or after raiding and en route back to a port where they could offload their goods. More than one such record contained an explicit advisory to the crew to remain clear-headed when approaching prey or docking at their home port. In one case where a human second crew was intended, the advisory was crudely translated to Anglic as, "Raid ships. Get drunk. Be a hero.", when a more accurate translation would have been, "To be heroic, raid ships then get drunk, in that order." A note in that case's production logs says the construction crew used the cruder translation because they believed the intended audience would be more receptive to it.

During the Uwaralyekose (Aslan Cultural Purge) between -56 and 49, all known instances of this class were hunted down and destroyed. The upgrade kit blueprints were left in human shipyard databases, though. Inevitably, eventually, more kits were manufactured and used by the occasional Aslan pirate clan who stopped caring about offending the Aslan Hierate. Very few of these - or the clans who use them - last more than a year once discovered.

Even with the significantly higher cost (and maintenance), and cargo capacity reduced from about 1/2 to about 1/3 of the ship's tonnage, some operators attempt to continue to use this as a Tramp Vessel, particularly for belt mining (using the extra speed to make faster deliveries, and thus more trips per month). Although this can work in the right circumstances, it more often results in mounting debt. A Siyuihwye II is far more suited to paramilitary activities than civilian. The experiences of one of the original Siyuihwye operators, who had personal difficulty adjusting to a pirate's life after her ship was upgraded, were made into an epic poem; all copies of this work were eradicated when the Aslan Hierate mostly erased the clan from history, and all that remains is a review of it in the notes of a member of an upgrade kit construction crew.

Class Naming Practice/s & Peculiarities

Ship Interior Details (Peculiarities): The main differences from a Siyuihwye class Armored Trader introduced by the upgrade kit are:

  • Double armor thickness
  • Densitometers, jammers, and generally massively boosted sensor processing capability
  • Upgraded computer and fire control software
  • Upgraded lasers (if the turrets still held laser drills instead of serious weapons)
  • Extra reactor units, primarily to power the lasers
  • Slightly expanded fuel tanks to power the extra reactors
  • Maneuver drive units expanded (all internally) 3.5 fold
  • Fully regenerative life support added to allow more endurance away from port
  • About 2/3 the cargo capacity, to make room for all of the above

The refurbishment process is similar to the practice of gutting a Sulieman class Scout/Courier hull and putting some other standard configuration in, though not as extreme even if some of the jump drive capacitors are moved around to make room for the sensors.

Class Naming Practice/s: Kit-upgraded Siyuihwyes retained their names upon conversion.
