The Sindalian Empire was a former interstellar state in the Trojan Reach, centered on Old Sindal (Trojan Reach 2018, now called Noricum).

Description[edit]

The empire succeeded in building trade links, but its focus was always on defence and expansion instead of consolidation. When the empire ran out of worlds to conquer, the central government became autocratic and unnecessarily brutal.

Goals[edit]

Initially founded to defend against raiders, in time the primary purpose of the empire was to maintain its control of member worlds, which it eventually did with great brutality, while ironically draining these worlds of riches more successfully than any raider.

History & Background (Dossier)[edit]

It was founded in -2074 and at its height included 20 mainworlds and scores of colonies and outposts on worlds up to 24 parsecs away.

  • In -1597, dissenters from the empire first settled in Beyond Sector. Raids by three successive Sindalian emperors forced the dissidents to abandon their first colonies and retreat 50 parsecs beyond Old Sindal to Corella. Some didn't think this was far enough and pushed the Diaspora onward, reaching Andwella Subsector and even Fulani Sector, but contact with these distant outposts was eventually lost.

The Sindalian emperors became more and more despotic, and in -1490 a period of widespread civil dissent began. It lasted for five decades and ended in a bout of bacteriological warfare.

  • The civilization of Old Sindal broke down for good in -1446 and the last remnant of the Empire itself ceased to function in -1441.

The "second world" of the empire, Albe, might have been able to stave off the collapse of the Empire, or at least ensure that it became the new capital, given its great wealth. Instead, its leader Gorluun refused to commit to any course of action, and when the Empire ended, it took with it the trade routes that kept Albe's vast population fed. "Gorluun's Feast", a ten-year period following the fall of Noricum, took the lives of billions on Albe.

Many worlds in the region were settled from Sindalian member worlds or by refugees fleeing the civil war.

Linguistics[edit]

The Sindalians' language was essentially similar to modern Galanglic.

Major Historical Events Timeline: 1116[edit]

These are some of the more important historical events that have affected this polity:

  • Circa -2000: The first Solomani scouts from the Empire reach Delta Cephei Subsector.
  • -1733: The first settlement of Oberon (later Htoleakh) by Sindalian dissidents begins the Sindalian Diaspora.
  • -1598: The Sindalian Empire destroys the first Oberon colony.
  • -1597: Corella is settled by refugees from Oberon, and the original Corellan Constitution is signed.
  • -1582: Dissidents and defeated factions from Sindal's civil wars reach Andwella, establishing a seed colony of nearly 1,500 people.
  • -1492: An outpost is established on frozen Issoudun, a way station to the distant Diaspora world of Fulani.
  • -1490: A period of widespread civil dissent begins.
  • -1480s: The Huad Yai outpost is built as a refuelling station for ships venturing between Corella and Sindalian Diaspora settlements to spinward.
  • Circa -1450: Oberon and Halifax (later Eteasteah) are resettled by Sindalian refugees and defectors.
  • -1446: The civilization of Old Sindal breaks down for good.
  • -1441: The last remnant of the Empire ceases to function.
  • Circa 1400: Keshto, Valhalla, Yangikent, and Garrone (later Stormhaven) are settled, marking the end of the Sindalian Diaspora.

Legacy[edit]

Many worlds in the Trojan Reach offer clues to their former allegiance. On Oghma, the starport still bears the dragon sigil of the Sindalians. Water purification plants on Yggdrasil preserve examples of the old Imperial technical language. On Homestead, a villager will greet a friend with a hearty 'peror's blessing upon ye' -- with 'peror', the Homesteaders' deity, being derived from memories of the Emperor of Sindal.

More ominously, blast craters on Ace, mass graves on Thebus and plagues on Lacidaeus bear testament to the vanished Empire.

Government & Politics (Leadership)[edit]

Albe was second only to Noricum in terms of power, and was superior in industrial production and financial sway. The Dukes of Albe could buy and sell the Emperors of Sindal, who were insultingly called the 'Dogs of Albe' by some.

The Theev Cluster was an important thoroughfare for high-jump traffic in and out of the capital.
