The rank of Senior Chief Petty Officer (E8) is the second highest non-commissioned officer rank in the Imperial Navy.

Description (Specifications)

Senior Chief Petty Officers are typically the second of the petty officer aboard ship and rated "Mate". e.g. Machinist's mate. Aboard smaller vessels, they may be the most senior petty officer aboard.

Senior Chief Petty Officers may also have the {semi-derogatory} nickname of Starshina.

History & Background (Dossier)

The term petty officer dates back to the Age of Sail. They were a senior sailor, less than the officers but more senior than other ordinary sailors, was known as a petty or lesser officer.
