The rank of Senior Chief Petty Officer (IN) (E8) is the second highest non-commissioned officer rank in the Imperial Navy.
Description (Specifications)
Senior Chief Petty Officer (IN)s are typically the second of the petty officer aboard ship and rated "Mate". e.g. Machinist's mate. They may also have the nickname of Starshina. Aboard smaller vessels, they may be the most senior petty officer aboard.
- The equivalent rank in the Imperial Army (Close Orbit and Airspace Control Command) is Master Flight Sergeant.
- The equivalent rank in the Imperial Army (Ground Force Command) is Master Sergeant.
- The equivalent rank in the Imperial Army (Nautical Force Command) is Senior Chief Petty Officer.
- The equivalent rank in the Imperial Marines is also Master Sergeant.
History & Background (Dossier)
The term petty officer dates back to the Age of Sail. Here a senior sailor, less than the officers but more senior than other ordinary sailors, was known as a petty or lesser officer.
