Second Lieutenant may also be known as:

  • Ensign: because of the historic role of carrying the unit's flag (and defending it to the death)
  • Shavetail: {Generally disparaging} because of the historic habit of shaving the tails of newly broken-in pack animals called Mules.

History & Background (Dossier)

The term Lieutenant is indicative of this rank being derived from the role of being the deputy commander of a Company under a Captain.

A Second Lieutenant is aspirant to that exalted position, and is considered to still be under on-the-job training.
