System Data

Manusta-Quistil System

The primary is Manusta, a red giant star. It has a luminosity of 2382.5 Sols, a mass of 7.85 Sols, and a diameter of 363.155 million km – the corona of the star extends to 1.22 AU, within orbital position (IV). The inner system consists of (V-I) a vacuum worldlet, (V-II) a trace atmosphere inner world, (VI) a corrosive atmosphere inferno world, (VII) an exotic atmosphere stormworld, (VIII) a trace atmosphere worldlet, (IX-I) a sparse stony planetoid belt, and (IX-II) a sparse stony planetoid belt – orbital position (IV) is empty. (X) Mayag, a large gas giant, orbits within the habitable zone: (Xc) Quistil is its outer moon and is designated the mainworld. (XI-I) a ringed small gas giant, (XI-II) a ringed large gas giant, (XII-I) a large gas giant, (XII-II) a small ice giant, and (XIII) a dense icy planetoid belt form the outer system. Many of the worlds retain satellites.

(X) Mayag

(X) Mayag is a large gas giant that orbits Manusta at a mean distance of 41.2 AU (6.2 billion km), within the habitable zone, and has an orbital period of 94 years 141 days. It has a diameter of 77,000 km and an atmosphere consisting of 90% hydrogen (H2), 10% helium (He), and less than 1% methane (CH4), carbon monoxide (CO), ammonia (NH3), water vapor (H2O) and other trace gases. It is a brown-tan color with broad pale bands and large semi-permanent equatorial storms. It retains a family of three major satellites.

Satellites

Mayag retains three major satellites:

(Xa) Hardin (UWP H100000-0, orbiting at 7 Diameters/540,000 km)
(Xb) Fasini (UWP Y3A0000-0, orbiting at 11 Diameters/850,000 km)
(Xc) Quistil (designated the mainworld, orbiting at 14 Diameters/1.08 million km)

Mainworld Data

(Xc) Quistil

(Xc) Quistil is the outer of the three major moons of (X) Mayag and is designated the mainworld. It orbits its parent world at a mean distance of 14 diameters (1.08 million km), with an orbital period of 113 days 6 hours: it is tidally locked to Mayag. The axial tilt is 3 degrees relative to Mayag. Quistil has a diameter of 10,102 km, a density of 4.46 g/cm³ and a surface gravity of 0.64 G. Tidal stresses generated by the gravitational pull of Mayag cause frequent geological activity. The atmosphere is rated as Standard, Tainted, with a mean surface pressure of 1.23 bar and a composition of 77% nitrogen (N2), 21% oxygen (O2), 1% argon (Ar), and 1% water vapor (H2O), carbon dioxide (CO2), ozone (O3), neon (Ne) and other trace gases. The taint is caused by the relatively high levels of background radiation: emission rates exceed 10 rads per hour. Around 36% of the surface is covered in seas of liquid water: average tidal ranges exceed 0.3m. Mean surface temperature: 13°C. The climate is rated as Temperate-Cool and is static, with no seasonal changes during the local year. The atmosphere is dynamic and strong weather systems driven by the star and the seas sweep across the globe.

Mainworld Geography and Topography

Total surface area: 320 million km², Land surface area: 205 million km², Water surface area: 115 million km².

Native Lifeforms

Manusta-Quistil System

Quistil, the mainworld, has extensive native life, consisting of radiation-tolerant microscopic organisms, stromatolite-parallels and primitive flora that can be found in almost every ecological niche. Their metabolic functions drive the process of atmospheric renewal.

No other world in the system is known to have native life.

History & Background (Dossier)

Genetically modified food crops carefully regulated by watchful Hoppers, are grown here in abundance with little threat from the indigenous life which is enzymatically ill equipped to take advantage of the chirality of the genomes and proteins. About 114 years ago, vast commercial estates and plantations began to grow fibrous raw materials which can be produced here so cheaply that textile manufacture off-world can still turn a massive profit. Supported by a complex network of canals and crude irrigation systems, carefully managed labor arrangements mandate affordable production. The deeply seated fear of advanced technology is so ingrained in the cultural zeitgeist at this point using advanced robotic harvesting would be abhorrent and unthinkable. Cultural contamination and bias manipulation from motivated corporations is widely suspected. Strictly enforced building codes require thick bunker like walls and ceilings of reinforced concrete on all buildings rated to provide greater protection than starship hulls. Most public social spaces are deep underground. Pedestrian tunnels connect complex burrows. Very crude electric and gas lightning systems persist with some imported assistance. Lanterns and torches are not unheard of. Plant based oils can be pressed into service as fuels, venting and chimneys with fans to keep air circulating are important for safety.

There are no macroscopic predators so the environment of the world is not inherently dangerous, and free ranging near feral children here would be ill-equipped to cope with the concept of dangerous animals. By age 18 fun and games are over and newly oathsworn citizen adults are expected to report for duty as indicated by the state sponsored aptitude tests. After four years top performers are allowed to change careers with a supervisor’s approval. Social conformity is a highly valued trait. After hours drinking flavored ethanol solutions is a favored past time. Poetry and spoken world performances are very popular. Infidelity is very dangerous and carries draconian legal penalties. The population is overwhelmingly rural. Some 18 year-olds with the correct aptitudes are drafted for off world military service. Basic literacy is nearly 100%. Divorce is exceedingly rare. Life expectancy is shorter because cancer and mutation rates are very high. Imported anti-cancer treatments from high technology worlds are in great demand among the wealthy. The poor just die young. Wealth is concentrated in a small upper class who all have ties directly or indirectly to off world trade cartels. Corporate bulk transport, their holds replete with loom droids, churn out the latest fashions on the journey to cosmopolitan markets on more populous wholesale and retail trade worlds.

Rumors of a democratically minded terrorist organization may lurk in the shadows to threaten the carefully curated stasis quo. For a while, matters had gotten bad enough that an arbiter from Sarudis (world) was brought in to mediate. As is typical on many fringe worlds, non-conformist outsider refugee nomads who wander at the fringes of civilization are frequently blamed for troubles.

Military contractors were brought in several decades ago to seed the orbital space of the main world with one of the largest thermonuclear mine fields in the Orret Subsector. Militarily incapable of mounting a defense against Sath Alliance invasion forces, it was deemed prudent to lay thick layers of captor mines. Ancient rumors and Starport tavern tales relate how a Kach'k class Scout ran afoul of this defensive hedgerow and its radioactive wreckage orbited for years before decay forced a fiery reentry. Wishful thinking or fact, few alive today know for sure. Corporate traders authorized to interface with port control are given access codes to permit transit for cargo shuttles. Downport is almost completely devoid of starship traffic. They must wait in space. Typically, only company shuttles are allowed to ferry cargo and passengers to and from the surface. Free agents without company connections are usually made to wait for inspections prior to permits being issued. A time-consuming process which is delivered by hand by planetary officials aboard chartered Smallcraft in the form of a clipboard full of handwritten orders including Logistic Permission, Customs Manifests, and Bill of Lading on crisp sheets of cellulose fiber, which must be signed in triplicate and in blue ink! If trade authority inspectors are satisfied, only then can free traders be permitted to land, well trained and thoroughly vetted harbor pilots equipped with local top-secret clearances are the only ones permitted to land and take off. Many travelers prefer to use wilderness refueling than tolerate the bureaucracy necessary for refueling operations.

World starport

Quistil has a Class D Starport, a poor quality installation which has few of the expected amenities. There is unrefined fuel for starships and a limited variety of ship provisions. There is no shipyard of any kind, but there may be parts and technical support for doing minor services and repair. Ports of this classification generally consist of only a downport, unless this is a trade port or system with an hostile environment mainworld.

World technology level

Quistil possesses a Technology Level of TL–3.

World government

Quistil is governed by a Civil Service Bureaucracy. The leadership of the government is another form (democracy, dictatorship, oligarchy), but the bureaucracy leadership influences policy. The government leadership may select the bureaucracy leadership, but not its membership. Usually the governmental leadership is divided, or incapable of setting policy and the bureaucracy provides a stabilizing influence. The bureaucracy may be the full government bureaucracy or a section with limited jurisdiction but considerable influence like the military.
