History & Background (Dossier)

No information yet available. In the 1060s, when word of the Imperial dreadnoughts began circulating, the Caledonian military undertook a study of the concept.

The designers rejected the idea of the "all in one" dreadnought - a la the Tigress Class Dreadnought, which combined carrier and battleship functions. Caledonian fleet architects - including Admiral Euan Urquehart, the chief of the Navy's Design Establishment at the time, judged the Tigresses to be a flawed compromise that tried to do too much in one platform; too big to armor to Caledonian doctrinal specifications, operating too close to the action to truly operate effectively as a carrier (again, according to Caledonian doctrine).

As a result, Urquehart designed a battleship that was very large compared to existing Caledonian designs (the 240,000 ton Morris I, Roger II and Ian III classes), but entirely focused on fighting effectively in the line of battle.

Like all Caledonian battleships, the Johns prioritize their designs to favor...:

  1. Protection - Armor, damage control and structural integrity.
  2. Firepower, both offensive and defensive
  3. Speed. Caledonian battleships are of fairly average speed and agility - but rely on the Caledonian fleet's strategic mobility (and the skills of its commanders) to facilitate choosing the place and time of the battles, rather than raw maneuver speed.

Class Naming Practice/s & Peculiarities

Contruction: The Johns were built as follows:

  • 26 at the Armstrong Yard at the Caledon up port starting in 1068
  • 12 at the Admiralty Yard at Douglass
  • 2 at the Fairmile Yard on Stirling

40 have been completed so far. The completed ships serve in all of the RCN's task forces with single-digit numbers except for Task Forces 2 and 3.

The class is no longer in production; the last unit, Regent John Munroe was commissioned in 1090. Many have been refitted to almost Stuart IV standard. They are intended to serve for many years to come.
