Following the example from the UWP page Roup has a population code of 9 and a population multiplier of 3. Thus the population is roughly 3x109 people or 3 billion (3,000,000,000 - three followed by 9 zeros). The actual population will be between 2.5 and 3.5 billion.

"Barren" worlds are those worlds with a Population UWP code of zero, Government code 0, Law level code 0 and a Tech Level of 0. Worlds with such elements in the UWP qualify for the Ba trade classification.

The Population code from the Universal World Profile is the order of magnitude of number of sophonts inhabiting the system.

Description[edit]

The Population code from the Universal World Profile is the order of magnitude of number of sophonts inhabiting the system. The population is represented on a logarithmic scale, with the population digit showing the number of zeros in the population number.

Population Codes
Code Description Population (where P is the population multiplier)
0 None 0
1 Low 1 to 99 (P0)
2 Low 100 to 999 (P00)
3 Low 1,000 to 9,999 (P,000)
4 Moderate 10,000 to 99,999 (P0,000)
5 Moderate 100,000 to 999,999 (P00,000)
6 Moderate 1 Million to just under 10 Million (P,000,000)
7 Moderate 10 Million to just under 100 Million (P0,000,000)
8 Pre-High 100 Million to just under 1 Billion (P00,000,000)
9 High 1 Billion to just under 10 Billion (P,000,000,000)
A High 10 Billion to just under 100 Billion (P0,000,000,000)
B High 100 Billion to just under 1 Trillion (P00,000,000,000)
C Very High 1 Trillion to just under 10 Trillion (P,000,000,000,000)

Population multiplier[edit]

The Population Multiplier digit of the "PBG" gives the first digit of the population number. The total population of a system will be: population multiplier times 10 to the power of population code.

For example, Roup (Spinward Marches 2007) has a population code of 9 and a population multiplier of 3. Thus the population is roughly 3x109 people or 3 billion (3,000,000,000 - three followed by 9 zeros). The actual population will be between 2.5 and 3.5 billion.

Population trade codes[edit]

There are four Trade Classification codes associated with the population level of a world

Ba - Barren
The system has no population and no evidence of ever being inhabited.
Di - Die Back
The system has no population, but there is evidence of previous habitation.
Lo - Low population
As on the table above, the world has a population between 1 and 10,000 sophonts.
Ni - Non-industrial
As the medium population on the table above, the system has a population between 10,000 and 10 million.
Ph - Pre-high population
The system has a population between 100 million and 1 billion
Hi - High population
Per the table above, the system has a population over 1 billion sophonts.

Population Composition[edit]

Sophont Demographics[edit]

A Population may be made up of a single type of Sophont or may includes various different ones. The IISS doesn't usually reference Sophont groups of under 1% of the population. The type of Sophont is either explicitly named with 10ths defined (e.g. {Souggvuez:8} on Talon) or implicit from the Allegiance Code of the world.

It should be noted that the IISS is not always accurate in these assessments, and many occupants of the world are ignored if they are not officially recognised as Sophonts by the IISS.

Population Status[edit]

The IISS have further classified Sophonts present on a World as[1]:

Category Description
Natives Intelligent Life evolved on this world
Exotics Local Intelligent Life incompatible with human environments
Transplants Sophonts evolved elsewhere and settled on the world years ago
Extinct Intelligent Life evolved on this world, but now extinct
Vanished Evidence of Transplants, but Transplants are no longer present
Transients Non-permanent commercial or scientific activity
Settlers The initial steps of creating a colony
Colonists Recent immigrants to the world
