This UWP code is an indicator of the world's population. This figure represents the exponent (number of zeros) which follow the first population digit (this digit is outlined in the extended data).

Description (Specifications)

Following the example from the UWP page Roup has a population code of 9 and a population multiplier of 3. Thus the population is roughly 3x109 people or 3 billion (3,000,000,000 - three followed by 9 zeros). The actual population will be between 2.5 and 3.5 billion.

High Population worlds are generally shown in all caps (e.g. ROUP) on sector/subsector maps.

Population Codes
Code Description Population (where P is the population multiplier)
0 Low <10 (P)
1 Low 10 to 100 (P0)
2 Low 100 to 1,000 (P00)
3 Low 1,000 to 10,000 (P,000)
4 Moderate 10,000 to 100,000 (P0,000)
5 Moderate 100,000 to 1,000,000 (P00,000)
6 Moderate 1 Million to 10 Million (P,000,000)
7 Moderate 10 Million to 100 Million (P0,000,000)
8 Moderate 100 Million to 1 Billion (P00,000,000)
9 High 1 Billion to 10 Billion (P,000,000,000)
A High 10 Billion to 100 Billion (P0,000,000,000)
B High 100 Billion to 1 Trillion (P00,000,000,000)

History & Background (Dossier)

In addition, Marc Miller has stated that the Population Multiplier digit of the "PBG" UWP element must also be zero to qualify for the Ba trade classification.

Barren Worlds

"Barren" worlds are those worlds with a Population UWP code of zero, Government code 0, Law level code 0 and a Tech Level of 0. Worlds with such elements in the UWP qualify for the Ba trade classification.
