Penedur is a poor, nonindustrial world.

  • As a nonindustrial world, it requires extensive imports of outside technology to maintain a modern, star-faring society. The need to import most manufactured and high technology goods drives the price of these goods up in the open market.
  • This world has few prospects for economic development.
  • It is a member of the Unity of Sed in the Cradle Subsector of Halcyon Sector, which is part of the Distant Fringe.

System Data

Modon-Penedur System

The primary is Modon, a dim red main sequence star. It has a luminosity of 0.001 Sols, a mass of 0.215 Sols and a diameter of 280,000 km. (I) a sparse stony planetoid belt, (II) Penedur, designated the mainworld, (III) a large gas giant, (IV) a ringed large gas giant, (V) a large gas giant, (VI) an exotic atmosphere bigworld, (VII) a vacuum iceworld, (VIII) a small gas giant, (IX) a vacuum iceworld, and (X) a dense icy planetoid belt form the outer system. Many of the worlds retain satellites.

Mainworld Data

(II) Penedur

(II) Penedur is designated the mainworld. It orbits Modon at a mean distance of 0.43 AU (64.3 million km), within the outer system. It has an orbital period of 222 days 3 hours and a rotation period of 17.7 hours. The axial tilt is 11 degrees. Penedur has a diameter of 7,584 km, a density of 7.36 g/cm³, and a surface gravity of 0.79 G. The world is geologically active. Its atmosphere is rated as Very Thin, Tainted, with a mean surface pressure of 0.29 bar and a composition of 78% nitrogen (N2), 21% oxygen (O2), and 1% argon (Ar), water vapor (H2O), carbon dioxide (CO2), neon (Ne) and other trace gases. The atmospheric taint is caused by high levels of background radiation and airborne radioactive dust: emission rates exceed 15 rads per hour. Approximately 18% of the surface is covered in lakes and seas of liquid water: average tidal ranges exceed 0.25m. Mean surface temperature: -98°C. The atmosphere is sluggish and weak weather systems driven by the star drift across the globe. The climate is seasonal.

Satellite

Penedur retains a single natural satellite, an ice-capped vacuum worldlet named Norgan:

(IIa) Norgan (UWP H201000-0, orbiting Penedur at 30 Diameters/228,000 km)

Mainworld Geography and Topography

Total surface area: 181 million km², Land surface area: 148 million km², Water surface area: 33 million km².

  • Concentrations of radioactive material within the lithosphere of the world generate enough heat to keep the surface water in a liquid state, which in turn heats the surface regions around the waters to as high as -20°C.

Native Lifeforms

Penedur, the mainworld, has extensive native life, consisting of extremophile single-celled cyanobacteria-equivalents that can be found in every radiologically active area on the world. Their metabolic functions drive the process of atmospheric renewal.

History & Background (Dossier)

World starport

Penedur has a Class C Starport, an average quality installation which includes amenities including unrefined fuel for starships, some brokerage services for passengers and cargo, and a variety of ship provisions. There is a shipyard capable of doing maintenance and other kinds of repair. Ports of this classification generally have only a downport, unless this is a trade port or system with an hostile environment mainworld.

World technology level

Penedur possesses a Technology Level of TL–7.

  • Common Communication technologies for this TL include: Early video and early satellite communication networks.
  • Common Power Generation technologies for this TL include: Early fuel cells, solar energy, and geothermal power sources.
  • Common Transportation technologies for this TL include:
    • Land: Improved automobiles, hovercraft, and bullet trains.
    • Water: Hydrofoils and early triphibians.
    • Air: Hang gliders and supersonic jets.
    • Space: Deep space probes and interplanetary spacecraft (System Craft).

World government

Penedur is governed by a Feudal Technocracy. Society divides itself based on the technical requirements of the society. Each of these functions are granted as a fief to an individual or group. Leadership of these fiefs determines the head of the government.

World Military

Local Defense Forces (approximately 300,000 personnel).

Unity of Sed militia forces (approximately 2.2 million personnel).

World Economy

  • Resources: 6 (Few)
  • Labor: 6 (Millions)
  • Infrastructure: 8 (Generally available)
  • Efficiency: −3 (Poor)

Trade Data
