The Paya class Light Freighter is a mercantile starship.

Description (Specifications)

The Paya class Light Freighter is built by Paya Shipyards (Paya (Spinward Marches 2410)). A small family run shipyard building the only Starships in the local cluster of 10 systems. Each Light Freighter is built to exacting standards, with only one or two completed each year. There are an estimated 50 or 60 of our Paya Light Freighters operating within the cluster today, by far the most popular Starship in use and a testament to Paya Shipyards workmanship.

Versatile Shipping to suit Your needs.

Built with 52 tons of modular payload capacity, the 100 ton unstreamlined hull is capable of J1 and 1G, is operable with a crew of 2 (each with their own stateroom), comes equipped with a Pulse laser for defense and receives a custom paint job to match your corporate scheme.

Typically a versatile payload pack consists of 5 passenger staterooms equipped with bunks, 24 low berths and 21tn of cargo capacity. A secure 5 ton strongroom is installed as standard, meeting the contractual requirements for secure mail runs. If operating away from commercial sources of refined fuel (5 worlds of 10 in the local cluster), a 9 ton fuel purifier should be considered, displacing a stateroom and 5 tons of cargo capacity at no extra cost. Passengers may double up, occupying bunks in the 5 staterooms for 6,500Cr each per jump.

Sponsorship of the deposit can be obtained, often by courier companies looking for a 20 year contract to carry secure cargo at standard rates. The contract can be bought out by pro-rata payment of the deposit, 275,200Cr per year of the contract remaining.

Construction takes 30-40 weeks depending on other shipyard commitments and a 20% deposit with confirmation of a ship mortgage for the balance, is required before your new ship is booked into the construction schedule.

Annual maintenance may be completed within the J1 cluster at Paya (Spinward Marches 2509), Inthe (Spinward Marches 2410), Kinorb (Spinward Marches 2512), or Macene (Spinward Marches 2612). It is a warranty requirement that Paya Shipyard engineers provide the annual maintenance on the drives.

Basic Ship Characteristics

Following the Imperial Navy and IISS Universal Ship Profile and data, additional information is presented in the format shown in the sidebar. The small craft factor indicates the number of squadrons (...of ten subcraft) carried on the ship. Tonnage on the universal ship profile is shown in kilotons (...thousands of tons) where necessary. History & Background (Dossier)

The Paya Light Freighter has origins long before the great Payan disaster of 1075. Numerous examples dating before he disaster still operate in the cluster. The average age of the Fleet is 25 years with several vintage examples still operational after 80 years. More typically the Paya LF is considered un-economical after 40-50 years. The cannibalized remains of Paya LF's can be found at several Class E and X starports.

Class Naming Practice/s & Peculiarities

Criticisms: The Paya Freighter is very versatile, if perhaps marginal as a profit making ship. Very functional on-board, the crew of 2 or 3 occupy two staterooms, with passengers occupying the remaining, usually doubled up or bunking. High passage is not an option. The single Pulse laser may or may not be sufficient to protect secure cargo from organized criminals, pirates or Vargr raiders. Several Freighters have been lost due to mis-jump, the combination of un-refined fuel and lax drive maintenance eventually concluding in disaster and the loss of all on board. Construction quality can be sporadic, not helped by an almost complete lack of competition within the cluster and a lack of Shipping Safety oversight on most cluster worlds. Low berth occupants rarely get to have Doctors present on most worlds that are capable of overseeing their awaking on arrival. Resulting in perhaps higher numbers of deaths than might otherwise be expected. Several claims have been made on worlds of dead arrivals missing substantial parts of their luggage. However prosecuting the returning Captain has usually proved problematic.
