Natar is a ring of many small worldlets (planetoids AKA an "asteroid belt"), not capable of retaining an atmosphere or water, and nonindustrial in nature.

  • These worldlets warrant hazardous environment precautions.
  • Life in a vacuum requires great discipline. After all, it only takes one forgotten seal on a vacuum suit to spell death. Those who survive tend to be very methodically-minded and attentive to small detail.
  • The worldlets require extensive imports of outside technology to maintain a modern, star-faring society. Having to import most manufactured and high tech goods drives the price up for these items at this world.
  • It is a Non-Aligned world dominated by human sophonts located in the Natar Subsector of Far Home Sector.

System Data

Zened-Natar System

The primary is Zened, a swollen red bright giant star. It has a luminosity of 12,800 Sols, a mass of 15.6 Sols and a diameter of 860 million km – the corona of the star lies at approximately 2.87 AU, within orbital position (VI). The inner system consists of (VI) a hot large gas giant orbiting very close to the surface of the star, (IX) a sparse stony planetoid belt, (X) the Natar Main Belt, designated the mainworld, and (XI) a vacuum worldlet – orbital positions (I) to (V) lie within the gigantic star and orbital positions (VII) and (VIII) are empty. (XII) a large gas giant orbits within the habitable zone. (XIII-I) a vacuum iceworld, (XII-II) an exotic atmosphere bigworld, (XIV-I) a vacuum iceworld, and (XIV-II) a vacuum worldlet form the outer system. Many of the outer worlds retain satellites.

  • The star experiences frequent flare activity.

Mainworld Data

(X) Natar Main Belt

(X) the Natar Main Belt orbits within the inner zone and is designated the mainworld. It lies at a mean distance of 38.8 AU from Zened and is primarily made up of carbonaceous bodies with diameters of less than 150 km. The inner edge of the belt, with a higher concentration of nickel-iron bodies, is considered to lie at around 28.9 AU from the star and the outer edge of the belt is considered to lie at approximately 50 AU. The main inhabited body is named Port Natar, with a mean orbital distance of 35.2 AU around Zened and an orbital period of 52 years 320 days. It has a long axis of 450 km, a density of 3.88 g/cm³, and a surface gravity of 0.025 G. It retains no atmosphere and has no hydrosphere. Mean surface temperature: 195°C.

Native Lifeforms

Zened-Natar System

No world in the system is known to have native life.

History & Background (Dossier)

Orbit (XII) is a large gas giant named Arnor. Arnor lies within the star's habitable zone. One of its moons is home to a small, nearly abandoned research base. They used an advanced complex of slave brains. TL–11 lowberth preserved brains from terminally ill scientists and engineers form a hive mind library. Selection to be entombed in this library was considered a great honor. As a reward for productive work and research breakthroughs inmates of the library were granted access to biologically engineered synthetic bodies. Grown using their own DNA to craft androids clad in cloned flesh over high efficiency endoskeletons of carbon fiber and titanium. A few of these androids have escaped, some undiagnosed aberrant psychosis emerged amid the slave brains. They crafted a crude solar sailor from parts cannibalized from the facility and although most were apprehended, legend has it that a few may still lurk outside of civilization's thin veil. The practice has been shunned for the most part. A few stable brains have been allowed to persist. Some of them remember the exodus itself.

Orbit (XIII-I) is occupied by a vacuum iceworld, in high orbit a space station Galaton 9 hides in the shadow of the planet to avoid intense radiation from the system's giant red star. Vast parabolic mirrors and solar cell arrays power the station and supply the energy for the hydroponic gardens. Ruled by an eccentric oligarch, Senior Manager Hungren, who rejects the belter's democratic traditions, and his will is enforced by a small cadre of well-paid Mercenary minions. They wear skintight black combat vacuum suits and carry stun sticks. He covertly manages a lucrative black market for the criminal elite under the cover of a health spa. Rumor is that nearly anything can be had if the price is right. Many criminals come here for organ transplants and for cosmetic surgery, retina remapping and biometric swaps to make them more difficult to identify. He also helps with forged electronic identity documents for the desperate who are on the run.

The present belter society values the democratic traditions now in the wake of painful periods of strife and system wide wars amid petty tyrants who wanted power and their struggles cost many lives. Bitter memories persist, pasted down to new generations regarding the dangers of authoritarian regimes. Current union trade commissars are always on the lookout for rumors and conspiracies which might hint at overt political aggression. Large weapon and ammo caches have been hidden across the belt to ensure that deputized citizen militias can arm themselves should the need arise to throw off invaders or sinister domestic aggressor rebels. Most freelance belter vessels engaged in prospecting and asteroid mining are armed as a result. They are experts at gently nudging the right rocks to eventually produce collisions with targets anywhere within the system. Annoy people who can throw rocks at orbital velocities with great reluctance.

World starport

Natar has a Class C Starport, an average quality installation which includes amenities including unrefined fuel for starships, some brokerage services for passengers and cargo, and a variety of ship provisions. There is a shipyard capable of doing maintenance and other kinds of repair. Ports of this classification generally have only a downport, unless this is a trade port or system with an hostile environment mainworld.

World technology level

Natar possesses a Technology Level of TL–10 or TL-A in Hexadecimal Notation.

World government

Natar is governed by a Representative Democracy where government leadership is representatives elected by eligible voters. What determines an eligible voter varies. The representatives determine policy, including selecting members of the bureaucracy. There can be referendum, votes by eligible voters on specific subjects.

World military

Militia forces are raised from civilian volunteers in times of need. Conscription and drafts have proven to be entirely unnecessary. Small pockets of professional mercenaries, many from other worlds, have found their way here over the years. They are usually employed by corporations for security reasons. One year contracts predominate.
