Narsil is an industrial world with a tainted atmosphere. The system has a population over one billion. It is a member of Sword Worlds Confederation in the Sword Worlds Subsector of Spinward Marches Sector and in the Sword Worlds. This world supports a Sword Worlds Military Base and the system supports a Sword Worlds Naval Base.
Astrography & Planetology
Narsil is a member of the Spinward Main.
Narsil is an unusual planet, orbiting a rare M0 II giant star. Isildur was once a typical F7 V main sequence star, but about 1,500,000 years ago it started fusing helium in its core. The star then expanded far into its inner system and became much more luminous.
Any rocky planets Isildur once had are incinerated or nearly molten, but many of the icy bodies in the outer system have melted in the new sunlight. Until this time, Narsil was merely a frozen ball of gas, water, and rock, in an eccentric orbit that took it between 80 and 120 AU from the star. Suddenly, Narsil was in Isildur’s new habitable zone. The surface around the equator melted, creating a central ocean that has been slowly growing ever since with Isildur’s increasing heat.

Lifeforms
Life was introduced by the Ancients, much of it Terran in origin. Phytoplankton introduced into the ocean gradually reduced Narsil's carbon dioxide and created free oxygen. After that, fish, seabirds, and larger animals were added -- many of them Terran species, such as sea lions and polar bears.
When the Sword Worlders arrived, Narsil became important as an exporter of familiar species to "fill out" Human-useful ecosystems on other worlds in the subsector.
History & Background (Dossier)
Narsil is the most populated planet in the Sword Worlds Subsector, and an industrial powerhouse with few peers in the entire Spinward Marches. Only its relatively primitive technology holds it back. Narsil is also a gateway world to Darrian space.
In 44, Narsil united with Anduril to become the Double Monarchy, which endured until 604. The association benefited Narsil so much that it overtook Anduril in population and industry, growing to equal Gram and Sacnoth in power. For several centuries, Narsil had the greatest population growth of any Sword World, and industry took over as the main economic activity. One factor helping keep costs down was the lack of concern for environmental regulations. Narsil's atmosphere was already nearly tainted by the carbon monoxide and ammonia that continued to vent from within the planet, so no-one minded very much if new industries contributed to it.
By 800, Narsil was the preeminent industrial world in the subsector, but the air was definitely ruined by industrial production.
1105:
Narsil has long been the industrial powerhouse of the Sword Worlds, a status that will be difficult to keep in the wake of the new wave of environmentalism. Among the population, crowded into dirty cities, there is a great deal of ill-feeling about the environmental laws. If the factories close or change their labor-intensive, wasteful policies, then there will be mass unemployment. The populace would apparently rather suffer unbreathable air, ill health and perhaps an early death than lose their jobs. The rising tide of resentment has led to vandalism and violence on the streets. The formation of a special police force as part of the military has led to a lamentable sentients' rights record, and breeds more violence. The question is not if Narsil’s society is going to rip itself apart, but when.
Government
Narsil is ruled by a conglomerate of major business interests, 31 theoretically independent companies so interlocked through stock swaps and joint ventures that they usually act in concert for their mutual protection.
