Mainworld Conditions

A low axial tilt means little seasonal variation. The terrain is relatively flat, while the hydrosphere divides almost equally between freshwater lakes and saltwater seas. High radiation and volcanic outgassing make the environment inhospitable.

Lifeforms

Acheron's native life is completely inedihle, due to heavy-metal toxins and dextro amino acids. The locals grow food in hydroponic gardens, or synthesize it from yeast and single-cell proteins.

Sessile, plantlike creatures leach metals from the soil and incorporate them in their "woody" parts. Mobile lifeforms are generally amphibious, with tough exoskeletons.

Native Sophont (NIL): Acheron

Homeworld of the Acheron, a Human chimera.

History & Background

This world was first surveyed by the Vilani in -4027. They named it Guumushii, and noted that the wildlife and the radiation made it unappealing. They left the world unexploited.

The Terran Confederation discovered Guumushii in -2236. The Terrans renamed it Acheron, after a river in Hell. A number of genetic templates were designed and built to allow altered Humans to settle it, as the world was resource-rich and on the Vilani flank.

When the Rule of Man collapsed, the Terrans (now the Solomani) left, and the Human chimera seeded here was forced to survive on its own.

Third Imperium star charts label the world Nappa, though Acheron has again become a popular alternative name, since the Acheron Humans became prominent fighting against the Solomani during the Solomani Rim War.

Government

The 144 recognised regions of the planet each send two representatives to the Planetary Assembly, serving four year terms.

Imperial High (Landed) Nobility

Nappa, as a member world of the Third Imperium, holds the estates of three members of the Imperial Nobility, who are charged with overseeing the world.

Economy

  • Nappa, AKA Acheron, is a supplier of heavy metals, exotic organic products, and military services (the locals are very pro-Imperium and anti-Solomani).
  • Nappa imports anagathics, cosmetic medical care, agricultural produce, and manufactured goods.

World Culture

Despite their prevalent belief in luck and other superstitions, Acherons have very little use for organized religion. Most of their objections hinge on the concept of divine justice, or lack of it. They are a dour people, aware of how unfair the struggles of their race have been.
