The Namri of Namri are an aquatic Minor Non-Human Race native to Namri, a water world in Iphigenaia Sector.

Description (Specifications)[edit]

The Namri are a sophisticated aquatic species with a growing population. They are identified as a cephalopodoid and are carnivores, predating fish that live in the ocean. However, they are not their world's apex predators: there are many other large aquatic carnivores that regard the Namri as tasty morsels to snack on.

Physiology[edit]

The Namri have a number of arms and a body contained within a hard shell.

  • An average member of the species weighs around 200 kg and measures around 3 meters with its arms tucked in.
  • if their arms are outstretched they add an additional 2 meters to their length.

They have a long streamlined form. They travel "backwards" through the water, with their arms trailing behind them. They are able to control their buoyancy (and thus their depth) and propel themselves through the oceans by using a water jet. This buoyancy control allows them to maintain vertical or horizontal postures.

They are able to withstand very high water pressures.

They have large eyes and can see even in near darkness.

They can regrow lost limbs.

Psychology[edit]

Namri are inquisitive, acquisitive, and cautious, but somewhat paranoid. They tend to dislike outsiders.

The Namri exhibit recognized characteristics of intelligence:

  • Conceptual thought, including abstract language.
  • Social structure, including social organization.
  • Tool use, allowing environmental manipulation.

Namri psychology is driven by factors common to many sophonts:

  • Acquisition (stemming from the need to gather adequate nutrition),
  • Preservation (derived from the need to continue their personal existence), and
  • Perpetuation (the urge to continue the species).

History & Background (Dossier)[edit]

Namri make extensive use of basic biotech, derived from native organisms.

They use "ultrasonic fences", barriers of sound that deter predators, in order to create safe areas.

Demographics[edit]

The total known population equals 90 million individuals.

Native Culture[edit]

  • Homogeneity: A (discordant)
  • Acceptance: 5 (very aloof)
  • Strangeness: A (incomprehensible)
  • Symbols: 6 (somewhat concrete)

Local Technology[edit]

Namri possesses a Technology Level of TL–4.

Local Government[edit]

Namri is governed by a Civil Service Bureaucracy. The leadership of the government is another form (democracy, dictatorship, oligarchy), but the bureaucracy leadership influences policy. The government leadership may select the bureaucracy leadership, but not its membership. Usually the governmental leadership is divided, or incapable of setting policy and the bureaucracy provides a stabilizing influence. The bureaucracy may be the full government bureaucracy or a section with limited jurisdiction but considerable influence like the military.

Local Law[edit]

Namri has a high law level with laws covering many areas of interactions of people, corporations, and the government. A few worlds with this law level may be Amber Zones. Any interaction with the judicial system requires an Advocate trained in the local legal system. Law enforcement is present almost everywhere, either as people or via technology. Legal proceedings can take weeks to months to resolve and involve a dozen or more people. All blade weapons and firearms, and anything more destructive, are typically regulated or prohibited.
