Musuna is a poor, nonindustrial hellworld with a population struggling to survive in an inhospitable environment.

  • Hellworlds often offer daily, and sometimes even hourly, life-threatening situations to their inhabitants. Survivors often form intense survival skills and tend to be grim realists.
  • It requires extensive imports of outside technology to maintain a modern, star-faring society.
  • It is a member of the High Senate in the Loran Subsector of Halcyon Sector, which is part of the Distant Fringe.

System Data

Sarmado-Musuna System

The primary is Sarmado, a dim red main sequence star with a luminosity of 0.0025 Sols, a mass of 0.244 Sols, and a diameter of 334,000 km. (I) Musuna, designated the mainworld, (II) a trace atmosphere iceworld, (III) a vacuum worldlet, (IV) a ringed large gas giant, (V) a dense atmosphere stormworld, and (VI) a trace atmosphere radworld form the outer system. Many of the worlds retain satellites.

Mainworld Data

(I) Musuna

(I) Musuna is designated the mainworld. It orbits Sarmado at a mean distance of 0.17 AU (25.4 million km), within the habitable zone. It has an orbital period of 51 days 20 hours: it is tidally locked to Sarmado. The axial tilt is 6 degrees. Musuna has a diameter of 4,655 km, a density of 5.16 g/cm³, and a surface gravity of 0.34 G. Tidal stresses generated by the gravitational pull of Sarmado cause frequent geological activity. Its atmosphere is rated as Very Thin, Tainted, with a mean surface pressure of 0.31 bar and a composition of 85% nitrogen (N2), 14% oxygen (O2), and 1% argon (Ar), water vapor (H2O), carbon dioxide (CO2), radon (Rn), neon (Ne) and other trace gases. The taint is caused by the low percentage of atmospheric oxygen and high levels of atmospheric and background radiation: emission rates in some regions can exceed 5 rads per hour. Approximately 11% of the surface is covered in lakes of water kept liquid by geothermal heat: average tidal ranges exceed 0.25m. Mean surface temperature: -56°C. The atmosphere is sluggish and weak weather systems driven by the star drift across the globe. The climate is static.

Mainworld Geography and Topography

Total surface area: 68 million km², Land surface area: 60.5 million km², Water surface area: 7.5 million km².

  • Musuna is a Twilight Zone World.
  • The world experiences libration, which causes the star to move in the sky and periodically rise and fall above the horizon in the twilight region.

Native Lifeforms

Despite the very marginal conditions Musuna has primitive native life, consisting entirely of microscopic cyanobacteria-parallels that exist in any location where they can find sources of water, warmth and nutrition. Their metabolic functions maintain the process of atmospheric renewal.

History & Background (Dossier)

No information yet available.

World starport

Musuna has a Class D Starport, a poor quality installation which has few of the expected amenities. There is unrefined fuel for starships and a limited variety of ship provisions. There is no shipyard of any kind, but there may be parts and technical support for doing minor services and repair. Ports of this classification generally consist of only a downport, unless this is a trade port or system with an hostile environment mainworld.

World technology level

Musuna possesses a Technology Level of TL–8.

  • Common Communication technologies for this TL include: Fiber optics, improved telephones, and satellite communication and data networks.
  • Common Power Generation technologies for this TL include: Improved geothermal and improved batteries.
  • Common Transportation technologies for this TL include:
    • Land: Advanced automobiles.
    • Water: Triphibians and early artificial gills.
    • Air: Improved helicopters and hypersonic jets.
    • Space: Space shuttles, early space stations, and improved interplanetary spacecraft (System Craft).

World government

Musuna has a Captive Government or Colony. The world is ruled by an external government, there is no self-rule. A colony or conquered area. The local government is an oligarchy appointed by, and answerable only to, the external government.
