Description (Specifications)

It includes basic tools necessary for light metalworking, welding, and shaping. Metalwork may include the construction and repair of shelters, vehicle bodywork, and alteration of metal structural items. Archaic tool kits are essentially a portable blacksmith's forge and tools, while TL–5 versions may include a low-power cutting torch, welding rods, heavy hammers, metal cutting shears, files and abrasives. The TL–8 versions include these and a few basic power tools of various types. Less complete tool sets are available, but usually only include manual tools or a smaller selection of them.

Typical Mechanical and Metalworking Tools

Large and small hammers, slide hammer, lightsources, marking devices (chalk, pens), measuring devices (gauges, tapes or rulers), hex keys, pliers, crowbar, jemmy bar, screwdriver set, ratchet, socket set, set of spanners, adjustable wrenches, power cables, punches, hand welder, tin snips, powered cutter (plasma cutter), powered grinder, saws and files, powered drill and drill bits, heat gun, glue gun, riveter, multimeter, thread taps, lifting jack, crane arm, grav pallet, stiff brush, wire brush, grippers and tongs, anvil, portable furnace, penetrating oil, protective goggles, protective gloves.

History & Background (Dossier)

The contents of any tool kit should be balanced against its TL. Lower technology kits might contain more primitive or simplistic tools, while more advanced kits might contain sophisticated items such as gravitic rebalancers. The exact contents will vary depending on the size and weight of the tool kit: small kits contain the bare minimum, or may contain ingenious "multi-tools" with a variety of attachments and adapters.
