Mendan style="width: 250px; height: 350px; border: solid 1px black; float: right; clear: left" |
Mendan Sector has been a tense battleground since interstellar civilization became established in the area, although it was hoped that the founding of the Julian Protectorate would change this trend. The Julian experiment in long-term Human-Vargr partnership has been, most observers would allow, a general success, although politics here are always chaotic -- and the Yileans of Gashikan Sector have long had designs on the region.
Description (Specifications)
This rich cultural region has been experiencing turbulent racial relations between Humans and Vargr for several millennia. The many violent conflicts resulting from this racial animosity sometimes overshadow a fascinating multispecies interstellar culture that has grown despite the ongoing conflict. Core Julian Protectorate member states like the Asimikigir Confederation and the Rukadukaz Republic are, in various ways, committed to the species equality espoused by the Menderes Corporation. However, not all members are quite onboard with the ethos, and the collapse of the Second Empire of Gashikan resulted in an influx of new and hopeful members who didn't wish to join the Third Empire of Gashikan -- but are new to the Julian Human notion that Vargr are partners rather than the source of all evil. Politics remain lively.

History & Background (Dossier)
The Vargr claimed this region many millennia ago. Their chaotic political culture has made it among the least stable regions in an interstellar culture already known for instability. Much like Reaver's Deep Sector on the far side of Charted Space, the area is still known as a hot bed of corsairs and piracy. The place of the Droyne in the region is largely unknown.
The Asimikigir Confederation, with its culture of complete Vargr-Human equality (to the point of promoting the "panet" relationship that bonds the two races together as family) is the most powerful Julian state. Within Mendan, it's followed in influence by the Commonwealth of Mendan -- which was originally part of the Second Empire of Gashikan. The Commonwealth of Mendan has embraced the general Julian ethos, but is the conservative voice in the Protectorate Council, urging restraint in relations with other states, and generally arguing against expansion of the Protectorate.

Major Historical Events Timeline: 1116
These are some of the more important historical events that have affected this sector:
- -2235 to -2219: A family of Solomani traders, the Menderes, establish lucrative trade routes along the Mendan Main.
- -1658: the Sack of Gashikan, an atrocity known throughout the coreward parts of Charted Space.
- -1483 to -321: the Gashikan Race Wars rage between human and Vargr extremists across the Extents.
- -321: Karik Menderes of Menderes Corporation raises all Menderes Vargr to the status of employees.
- This starts a movement that makes slavery illegal on Asimikigir by -302.
- -275: Tran Menderes breaks precedent by accepting a Vargr offer to carry Menderes goods off planet. Until now, Kudukara Lines, the principle transport line of the Second Empire of Gashikan, has carried all goods for the region.
- (175 to 191): Julian War; the region unites to fight off the Third Imperium as it attempts to incorporate Amdukan, Mendan and Meshan sectors by force.
- Early 600s: After centuries of increasingly common peaceful (if wary) interaction, the Hhkar Sphere joins the Julian Protectorate.
- 933-936: The defection of the Damlaer Union from the Julian Protectorate to the Hegemony of Lorean leads to the Lorean Strikes. Failed military action leads to a major political crisis within the Protectorate.
- 940: As part of this political upheaval, the government of the Ikonaz Sphere collapses, replaced by the Rukadukaz Republic.
- 942: The Protectorate and the Hegemony formally sign the Treaty of Var-Inaka (restricting naval basing) and the Julian Concord, incorporating the Hegemony into the Julian Protectorate.
- 1070: The Second Empire of Gashikan is shattered by civil war.
- In the aftermath, while many Gashikan systems recoalesce into the Third Empire of Gashikan, others form the Commonwealth of Mendan and instead join the Julian Protectorate.
Politics & Diplomacy (Interstellar Relations)
Like most of the Vargr Extents, instability is rank, but with the establishment of the Julian Protectorate, polity overturn has become far more stable.
