The rank of Master Sergeant (E8) is the non-commissioned officer rank in the Imperial Army for the most senior non-commissioned officer in an Imperial Army Company.

Description (Specifications)

Each Company in the Imperial Army has one Master Sergeant who is the most senior Sergeant in the unit (usually referred to as the "First Sergeant"). Some Imperial Army Regimental (and above) staff appointments are also for Master Sergeants.

History & Background (Dossier)

The term sergeant refers to a non-commissioned officer placed above the rank of a corporal. The term master sergeant thus refers to the chief of these sergeants within the company.

Historically, these Sergeants were responsible for protecting the regimental flags (colours) of the field of battle. They still have a role in ceremonials to do so. When performing this role they are still be addressed as Colour Sergeant.
