The rank of Master Flight Sergeant (E8) is the non-commissioned officer rank in the Imperial Army for the most senior non-commissioned officer in an Imperial Army Flight.

Description (Specifications)

Each Flight in the Imperial Army has one Master Flight Sergeant who is the most senior Sergeant in the unit (usually referred to as the "First Sergeant"). Some Imperial Army Group/Wing (and above) staff appointments are also for a Master Flight Sergeant.

• The equivalent rank in the Imperial Navy is Senior Chief Petty Officer (IN).
• The equivalent rank in the Imperial Marines is Master Sergeant.
• The equivalent rank in the Imperial Army (Ground Force Command) is Master Sergeant.
• The equivalent rank in the Imperial Army (Nautical Force Command) is Senior Chief Petty Officer (IA).

History & Background (Dossier)

The term sergeant refers to a non-commissioned officer placed above the rank of a corporal. The term master sergeant thus refers to the chief of these sergeants within the company.

Historically, these Sergeants were responsible for protecting the regimental flags (colours) of the field of battle. They still have a role in ceremonials to do so. When performing this role they are still be addressed as Colour Sergeant.
