The rank of Major (O4) is the commissioned officer rank in the Imperial Army that commands a Detachment or has duties of similar importance.

Description (Specifications)
Each Detachment in the Imperial Army larger than a Company will be commanded by a Major. The rank is also used for some administrative posts within a Battalion. Several staff posts at Regiment level (where these exist) or higher are also held by Officers with this rank.
- The equivalent rank in the Imperial Navy is Lieutenant Commander.
- The equivalent rank in the Imperial Marines is Force Commander
History & Background (Dossier)
The rank of Major is derived from sergent-majeur which was (at the time) the chief commissioned officer of a battalion below the Colonel and his Lieutenant Colonel.
