Maelstrom is a moderate population, preindustrial water world.

  • Its surface is 90% or more covered in an ocean of water.
  • The inhabitants of this world live on the roughly 10% of exposed land mass, in underwater colonies, on city ships, or similar arrangements.
  • As a preindustrial world, this planet cannot yet manufacture enough high-technology resources to support a modern, star-faring society. Having to import most manufactured and high tech goods drives the price up for these items at this world. This world has the Imperial Research Station Gamma for the Sector. It is a member of Third Imperium in the Geniishir Subsector of Deneb Sector and in the Domain of Deneb. Maelstrom, as a member world of the Third Imperium, holds the estate of an Imperial knight and the fiefdoms of a marquis and a viscount. All three are members of the Imperial Nobility charged with overseeing the world. 50% of the world's population is the Minor Race Chirper.

Government

The world is ruled by the technological elite.

Interstellar Relations

Lurent planetoid ships may be found, trading, in the inner system or in the system’s Oort clouds, refuelling.

Atmosphere

The dense, tainted atmosphere of Maelstrom makes the world look muddy from orbit.

Economy & Research

The system is a producer of innovative and high-tech habitat technology and contains an Imperial Research Station.

Research Station Gamma

Research Station Gamma was established in 708 to support the robotics research of Shinku University Research Directorate (SURD) and apply them to better management of the Imperium. The installation is at the forefront of Artificial Intelligence development. Makhidkarun funds robotics research on Maelstrom.

Point of Interest: Domed Arcologies

Several hundred million inhabitants live in domed arcologies in the shallow sections of the world ocean, just deep enough to be safe from the frequent and powerful storms.

History & Background (Dossier)

Maelstrom is aptly named. The world has a fourteen-hour rotation period, and vicious two hundred kilometer per hour winds whip the surface.

Fortunately the world is covered entirely in water, and the population lives entirely in underwater habitats with few or no surface protrusions.

The local ocean floor is littered with mineral deposits, particularly iron, nickel, copper and cobalt. The locals harvest these metals in Tiamat and Gashedda Mining Crawlers, which then offload their cargos into large Submersibles that carry the ore back to the Downport for processing and off-world shipment. The population of each habitat largely keeps to itself, as local conditions do not allow for much interaction.

Each colony is connected to the Downport by a series of "Underwater Trains", wheeled trams that carry passengers and cargo in safety. The local Downport is a vertical underwater platform that descends 700 meters to a radiating hub of tramways at its base. Incoming ships must make a water landing, on a small elevator platform that cancels their buoyancy and lowers them into the port.
