The Last Armada class Fleet Tender is a warship.

Description (Specifications)[edit]

The Fleet Tender is a historical design produced in the Terran Confederation during the early 22nd century. These ships fled the Destruction of Terra at the hands of the Vilani Imperium in 2147AD, forming a part of the Last Armada and carrying with them the last remnants of Terran culture and independence. The class were extremely sturdy and reliable and endured more than a century of spaceflight. They ultimately found and settled the Demon Cluster, the Distant Fringe.

The vessel was as much a tanker as a fleet tender. The class was designed with enough internal fuel for two consecutive jump-2s and was fitted with jump 2 drop tanks, and also had auxiliary power plant fuel for an additional 28 days: it was both a long-range and an extended range design. This enabled it to cross larger rift density regions. Limited by the constraints of TL–11 technology, its internal capacity was limited to transporting two 60.0 Ton Survey Shuttles, a 38,000 Ton Armored Cruiser, two 200 Ton Scouts, and a 1,200 Ton Fast Escort.

  • The vessel is a TL-11 design.

Basic Ship Characteristics[edit]

Following the Imperial Navy and IISS Universal Ship Profile and data, additional information is presented in the format shown here. The small craft factor indicates the number of squadrons (...of ten subcraft) carried on the ship. Tonnage on the universal ship profile is shown in kilotons (...thousands of tons) where necessary. [1]

Basic Ship Characteristics [2]
No. Category Remarks
1. Tonnage The Fleet Tender is constructed using a 99,000 Ton hull built in a Dispersed Structure configuration. The hull is unstreamlined and cannot operate in anything denser than Trace atmospheres without risking catastrophic structural failure.
  • The vessel is constructed around a long central spine.
  • There are multiple airlocks located around the vessel. The cargo hold is accessed by large doors.
  • The vessel is not capable of surface landings and risks catastrophic structural failure in significant gravity wells.
2. Crew 465 personnel.
  • 52 Officers.
  • 413 Enlisted, including 99 Security.

Accommodations

  • There are 232.5 Staterooms. All quarters are double occupancy.
  • There are 233 Low Berths. These hold the Frozen Watch. The low berths are tended by the vessel's medical staff.
  • It carries 2,000 GenPods and large embryo banks.

Accessible areas of the hull are fitted with grav plates and inertial compensators and have full life support and environmental systems.

  • There are internal monitoring and security systems throughout the vessel. Individual sections of the hull can be sealed off.
  • There are multiple emergency lockers.
3. Performance The vessel mounts a Jump-2 drive, a Maneuver-1 drive, and a Power Plant-2, giving performance of Jump-2 and 1-G acceleration. The ship has an agility rating of 1. The internal fuel tankage is sufficient for two consecutive Jump-2s and gives the power plant 4 weeks duration.
  • The engineering section has a main control room.
    • Ladders, gantries and platforms give access to the machinery.
  • The jump drive creates a jump bubble around the vessel.
  • The jump drive is fitted with a jump governor.
4. Electronics Adjacent to the bridge is a Model/5fib computer: the vessel has a backup Model/5fib computer.
  • There are multiple workstations and control points throughout the vessel.
  • The vessel is fitted with communications equipment, a standard sensor array, and has an avionics suite.
    • It is fitted with backup commo and sensor systems.
  • It has a transponder unit that can be deactivated on command.
5. Hardpoints 990 hardpoints.
  • There are 990 unused hardpoints. No space is set aside for weapons mounts or fire control equipment.
6. Armament The Fleet Tender is not armed.
7. Defenses The hull is unarmored.
  • The vessel is not fitted with screens or other passive defensive systems.
8. Craft Flight Section

Big Craft

The various subcraft attach to dedicated docking points located on the hull.

9. Fuel Treatment The vessel has internal fuel tankage of 41,580 Tons.
  • The vessel is equipped with a fuel purification plant that can refine all onboard fuel in a few hours: the plant is operated and maintained by the engineering crew.
10. Cost The basic cost of the vessel is MCr38,511.502
  • Architects Fee: MCr385.115
11. Construction Time 207 weeks (48 months) as standard.
  • Build times can be reduced by mass production and the efficiencies such processes generate, by increased financing, and by allotting additional yard resources and facilities to the construction contract.
12. Comments Standard cargo capacity amounts to 299.5 Tons.
  • The cargo hold can be sealed and has independent life support and environmental systems.
  • Sections of the hold may be isolated if desired and can be provided with specialized environmental conditions, typically refrigeration.

History & Background (Dossier)[edit]

Fleet Tenders were openly constructed at Terran-controlled shipyards, and once they were in a spaceworthy condition they were crewed with specially chosen personnel in preparation for "proofing trials". They were then jumped to the Expedition's private port facilities in the empty systems to rimward of Terra. Once there, their fitting out was completed, their specialist equipment (such as their complement of GenPods) was installed, and they were laid up against the Expedition's future needs.

Ships of this class nearly caused the collapse of the Expedition before it had started. Following the Battle of Agidda in 2125AD, and the "false war" that followed, the Terran navy was desperately short of capital ships – the lack of effective combat elements caused the war to descend into nearly a decade of entrenched skirmishing and long-range raiding. People began to notice that large warships and support vessels, noted as having been constructed and released, had simply vanished. Entire classes of capital vessels, it seemed, had been "lost in jump". Rather more sinisterly, individuals bearing striking resemblances to "missing in jump" crewmembers repeatedly reappeared.

Journalistic and governmental investigations into the missing ships, and the conspiracy that they represented, came very close to uncovering the covert activities of the Expedition.

A huge public scandal would have resulted if it had been revealed that an entire fleet-in-being was being retained for private use, a fleet that could easily have broken open the Vilani border and given the Terrans an overwhelming victory. It was the sort of scandal that brings down governments. It was only through the judicious intervention of senior officials, the actions of determined individuals, and outright criminal activity that secrecy was maintained and the hoarded vessels of the Expedition avoided sequestration.
