The Karhyri of Sfyri (Crucis Margin 0439) are a Minor Non-Human Race with a semi-humanoid appearance and technologically sophisticated sophonts. Some sources note the name of the individuals as Kahyri.

Description (Specifications)

The Karhyri are bipedal omnivore hunters, conforming to humanoid norms, with a reptilian-avian appearance. Their skin is leathery and their faces sport beak-like structures. They evolved in the rough woodlands of the Sfyri wilderness.

Size

The Karhyri have an average mass of 78 kg -- slightly greater than the average human. The difference in any one individual is not noticeable, but an average human in a large group of Karhyri will seem a bit short.

Gender and Caste

They have three genders -- Female, Male, and Neuter (called "Home-Guardian" by Karhyri) -- and three castes, known to humans as Winged, Tailed, and Common (by appearance). In fact, all Karhyri have tails and small wings (for display, not flight), but the castes in question have more pronounced features. Caste seems to be genetically determined, and all three sexes are found within all three castes.

Caste changes to another, randomly determined, caste at one point in a Karhyri's life, when aging sets in (around 48 standard years). Gender is also likely to change. It is also possible that the new caste and gender are the same as the old ones.

Life Stages

Adulthood is reached at 26 standard years. Physical aging begins at 48 standard years. Mental aging begins at 84 years. The average life expectancy is 96 years.

Senses

Vision is good, as is smell. Due to evolving in a K5 V star system, their vision is within the Near-IR and Red bands; Greens and blues are undetectable to them. Hearing and touch are weaker than that in humans. Karhyri have a very weak version of Awareness, which is the ability to detect electro-magnetic fields.

Body Structure

The Karhyri are bipedal upright walkers. The head is a housing for the senses only; the brain is actually located in the torso, although this may not be immediately apparent to humans. They follow a humanoid form, with two arms and two legs. Notable features include sharp teeth which can be used as an effective melee weapon, small wings for display, and grippers instead of hands.

Psychology & Philosophy (Mindset)

Karhyri have a strong honor-based behavioral system and almost no sense of subterfuge or deception. Some human traders have remarked that the Karhyri have next to no idea what a "poker face" is.

Social Organization

A sophont people whose nature conforms to a socially-oriented caste system (distinct from the biological caste system, though members of each genetic caste are typically found in certain social castes), dividing populations into rulers, patrons, enforcers, entertainers, artists, and "units".

To humans, this caste structure makes Karhyri appear obsessed with honor and duty. In turn, the typical Karhyri expects non-Karhyri individuals to fall naturally into one of these castes. Newly met humans are watched for telltale cues of a perceived caste, and are thenceforth treated accordingly.

Karhyri distrust Hivers, considering them to be without honour and thus barely deserving of sapience. Relations were damaged early on, when a solemn pilgrimage to return Hiver bodies (recovered from the crashed ship that gave Karhyri jump technology) was treated with casual indifference by the Hivers.
