Hertha is a preindustrial world.

  • As a preindustrial world, this planet cannot yet manufacture enough high-technology resources to support a modern, star-faring society. Having to import most manufactured and high tech goods drives the price up for these items at this world.
  • This world hopes to one day be one of the subsectors industrial powerhouses, but hasn't realized that dream yet. The leaders of this world are regularly embarking on trade missions to attract more investment capital, worker-immigrants, and other necessary stepping stones to achieve this goal.

Hertha is a vacuum world, which warrants hazardous environment precautions.

  • Life in a vacuum requires great discipline. After all, it only takes one forgotten seal on a vacuum suit to spell death. Those who survive tend to be very methodically-minded and attentive to small detail.
  • It is an icy world, its surface is ice-capped and nearly all of its water frozen.
  • It is a Non-Aligned world dominated by human sophonts located in the Rigel Subsector of Rigel Sector.

Mainworld Data

Hertha has a Good Starport with shipyards able of handling Spacecraft up to the Overhaul level, and provides Refined fuel. The main world is roughly 7,700 kilometers in diameter, and is a Small terrestrial with gravity of 0.15G . The atmosphere has a pressure of less than 0.1 atmosphere, which requires the use of a vacc suit. The surface is roughly 65 percent surface ice, which qualifies it as a wet world. The main world has a general population of 20 Million local residents, which qualifies it as a Moderate population world. The local government is characterized as Representative Democracy, with government by elected representatives. History & Background (Dossier)

631 : First visited and catalogued by a ship from Skanor. Documented as as an uninhabited vacuum, ice world.
700 : Scientific research team arrive from Skanor to investigate the world. Life was found in the form of nanobes living in the water that is in liquid form under the the surface ice.
725 : Significant deposits of lanthanum were discovered in an extensive cavern system under one of the land masses.
728 : Skania Pact worlds agreed to combine their resources to build a starport, seal, heat and add air to the cavern system, and setup a penal colony on Hertha to mine the lanthanum.
737 : First of thousands of convicted criminals arrived on Hertha, along with guards, engineers and scientists.
818 : Rebellion of Hertha. The inmates of the penal colony rose up and took over the mining and refining facilities. As all the planetary systems were in underground caverns, the rebels could not be attacked by spaceship weapons, but were vulnerable outside of the caverns. The rebels were able to receive some supplies from Chernosh, but Chernosh did not have the military power to break the siege or take the starport.
822 : Skania Pact worlds agreed to allow the rebels to take possession of Hertha, conditional that the lanthanum continued to be made avaiable to Skania Pact worlds only. The starport remained under the control of the Skania Pact worlds.

World starport

Hertha has a Class B Starport, a good quality installation which includes all the expected amenities including refined fuel for starships, brokerage services for passengers and cargo, and a variety of ship provisions. There is a shipyard capable of doing annual maintenance, overhauls and most kinds of repair, and construction of non-starships. Most ports of this classification have both a Highport and a Downport.

World technology level

Hertha possesses a Technology Level of TL–9.

  • Common Communication technologies for this TL include: Fiber optics and satellite communication and data networks.
  • Common Power Generation technologies for this TL include: Early fusion power.
  • Common Transportation technologies for this TL include:
    • Land: Ultra high-speed trains and early grav vehicles.
    • Water: High efficiency sailcraft, multihulled seacraft, improved artificial gills.
    • Air: Tiltrotorcraft, exotic VTOL's, PARWIG, and rocket-assisted suborbitals.
    • Space: SSTO spacecraft, early military spacecraft (System Craft), and interstellar STL starships
    • FTL: Prototype Jump Drive-1.

World government

Hertha is governed by a Representative Democracy where government leadership is representatives elected by eligible voters. What determines an eligible voter varies. The representatives determine policy, including selecting members of the bureaucracy. There can be referendum, votes by eligible voters on specific subjects.

World Law Level

Hertha has a high law level with laws covering many areas of interactions of people, corporations, and the government. A few worlds with this law level may be Amber Zones. Any interaction with the judicial system requires an Advocate trained in the local legal system. Law enforcement is present almost everywhere, either as people or via technology. Legal proceedings can take weeks to months to resolve and involve a dozen or more people. All objects specifically manufactured as weapons are typically regulated or prohibited (outside private residences or visiting starships).
