System Data

Varaso-Harkim System

The primary is Varaso, an ordinary yellow-white main sequence star. It has a luminosity of 2.126 Sols, a mass of 1.144 Sols, and a diameter of 1.639 million km. The inner system consists of (I) a vacuum iceworld, and (III) an exotic atmosphere stormworld – orbital position (II) is empty. (IV) Harkim orbits within the habitable zone and is designated the mainworld. (V-I) a very thin atmosphere hospitable world, (V-II) a sparse stony planetoid belt, (VI) a ringed large gas giant, (VII) a large gas giant, (VIII-I) a small gas giant, (VIII-II) a ringed large gas giant, and (IX) a small ice giant form the outer system. Many of the worlds retain satellites.

Mainworld Data

(IV) Harkim

(IV) Harkim is designated the mainworld. It orbits Varaso at a mean distance of 1.03 AU (154.1 million km), within the habitable zone. It has an orbital period of 356 days 23 hours and a rotation period of 33 hours. The axial tilt is 23 degrees. Harkim has a diameter of 11,904 km, a density of 4.81 g/cm³, and a surface gravity of 0.81 G. The world is geologically active. Its atmosphere is rated as Dense, with a mean surface pressure of 1.87 bar and a composition of 79% nitrogen (N2), 19% oxygen (O2), 1% argon (Ar), and 1% water vapor (H2O), carbon dioxide (CO2), ozone (O3), neon (Ne) and other trace gases. Approximately 53% of the surface is covered in oceans of liquid water: average tidal ranges exceed 0.15m. Mean surface temperature: 22°C. The climate is rated as Temperate-Warm and experiences moderate seasonal changes during the local year. The atmosphere is very active and powerful weather systems driven by the star and the oceans surge across the globe.

Satellite

Harkim retains a single natural satellite, a cratered vacuum worldlet named Sarager:

(IVa) Sarager (UWP Y200000-0, orbiting at 65 Diameters/775,000 km)

Mainworld Geography and Topography

Total surface area: 445 million km², Water surface area: 236 million km², Land surface area: 209 million km².

Native Lifeforms

Varaso-Harkim System

Harkim, the mainworld, has extensive, abundant native life, with complex organisms inhabiting every ecological niche. Their metabolic functions drive the process of atmospheric renewal. The Lorkim are a sample organism from this complex matrix of ecosystems that make up this planet's unique biosphere.

The cold hospitable world lying in orbital position (V-I) (within the H+ region of the outer system) has primitive native life, consisting entirely of microscopic cyanobacteria-parallels that exist in any location where they can find even a minimal trace of shelter and moisture. Their metabolic functions maintain the process of atmospheric renewal.

No other world in the system is known to have native life.

History & Background (Dossier)

Huzlo is one of the western-most city states. Crawling with cold, angry residents. The Impertinent Cyclone, a small lighter than air ship is based here at the main trade port. Available for charter to bring small consignments of valuable delicacies to the starport. Visitors are restricted to the foreign quarter. The city is segregated and these docks are notorious for the lazy workers, frequently caught sleeping or idly playing cards. Only members of the local ruling elite can instill sufficient fear to motivate the rabble to respond to off world visitors and merchants. This trade port is held hostage by a tedious, corrupt bureaucracy.

Rumors abound that the Demon Signet ring of the Curate of the San Go Tau monastery has been stolen. The local crime syndicate plans to auction off the ring. This ring serves two functions. It is used to legitimize coronation ceremonies to avoid dynastic crisis during succession events and to permit access to the demon. Duke Margol, a rowdy carouser, rumor has it, is the current Chancellor of Burgol and his airship the Indigo Lorkim has arrived in port. He has expressed interest in the fate of the ring. Outside the languid port, the citizens seem close to rioting. The royal customs house will grant trade privileges in exchange for off world assistance in this delicate matter. The local gangsters run a string of semi-legitimate tea houses as business fronts. They have members who are known to be skilled infiltrators and assassins.

Port Theo is a frontier harbor town far to the north and maybe an occasional safe harbor for pirates. The abundance of the seas is brought here, and it is an important and lucrative seafood market.

To the exotic east, the Frostback Mountain range is seemingly always wreathed in clouds and fog banks. This may or may not conceal a secret base of the Grand Emperor's fanatical sky guards.

The Curate professes to be only concerned with the safe return of his stolen property so that he can return to the path of enlightened tranquility. Several terrifying zealot members of his remote training institute are here to ensure his tranquility returns.

Prosperity Gulch, a deserted ghost town has been suggested as a smuggler's hide out. Locals warn that it is to be avoided. A mined out site, abandoned when the ore was depleted.

Orbital surveys may reveal a few sites which are evidence of the tower builder culture. An ancient alien civilization constructed solid state, solar powered, cylindrical uplink towers in a pattern across this planet. The technological demons which reside here have been known to abduct the odd member of a river clan tribe to become cyborg combat slaves under their alien AI control.

World starport

Harkim has a Class D Starport, a poor quality installation which has few of the expected amenities. There is unrefined fuel for starships and a limited variety of ship provisions. There is no shipyard of any kind, but there may be parts and technical support for doing minor services and repair. Ports of this classification generally consist of only a downport, unless this is a trade port or system with an hostile environment mainworld.

World technology level

Harkim possesses a Technology Level of TL–2.
