The Hamaran of Tethys (Dagudashaag 1114) are a Minor Non-Human Race with a semi-humanoid appearance and technologically advanced sophonts.
Physiology and Ecology
Hamaran grow to a length of about 60cm from snout to prehensile tail and are one of the smallest intelligent races within the Imperium. They are bipedal and have two powerful arms which end in extremely dexterous paws with five digits arranged in a star-like symmetry. They have two pairs of eyes, each of which is capable of independent focus and movement. They are as intelligent as humans, though with a much higher curiosity factor.
Diet
Hamaran are omnivorous, though most followers of the mainstream Böru religion avoid red meat, and many eat no animal flesh at all. However, fish is frequently eaten, not being categorised as "animal flesh" under their laws.
Archaeological and Cultural Sophontology
Originally descended from island dwelling hunter gatherers, at the time of their contact by the Vilani the Hamaran had reached a stable TL–5 society but were near to collapse due to population problems. Because of their apparently natural affinity with electronics, Hamaran were allowed to return with the survey team. Within a hundred years, small settlements of Hamaran were established throughout the sector, though they never colonized a world on their own, preferring to partner with humans in their endeavors.
Most Hamaran today are to be found working in medicine or in the electronic or mechanical industries and a great many have become engineers amidst the Free Traders.
During the Psionic renaissance the Hamaran displayed strong taboos against psionics and to this day have an intense racial hatred of psionic users. While extremely passive and gentle it should be noted that the Hamaran display extremely violent behavior when confronted by arachnid-like creatures.
Culture
Hamaran will join a specific Tas (voluntary interest group) at ten years old and will show allegiance to that group by supporting it both socially and financially. Although they will continue to live with their clan their primary allegiance is now to their Tas. Hamaran place no restrictions on their pups and many will join philosophically opposing groups from their parents.
Religion
Most Hamaran are deeply religious. The mainstream religion is Böru. This is a complex philosophy, but might be summed up as seeking the Three Jewels:
- Directing one's life towards the enlightenment and compassion personified by Tä Gyasu, the first Hamaran to walk the path to mortal godhood
- Following the teachings of Shaihyka
- Devoting themselves to upholding and strengthening their community
Hamaran believe that the greatest acts of charity are those that grant comfort to the Gyasö, the monks and nuns that act as examples of the holy Path of Shaihyka.
Language
The primary Hamaran language is Kiriani.
Most Hamaran speak Kiriani, though one of the requirements for entry into the Hachar Gyasö (Government) or working at a starport is a fluency in Galanglic and Galaach.
