Haden is a poor, industrial, high-population hellworld, with a billion or more sophonts in size, who struggle to survive in an inhospitable environment.

  • Hellworlds often offer daily, and sometimes even hourly, life-threatening situations to their inhabitants.
  • As an industrial world, this planet has well-developed manufacturing and processing industries. Manufactured goods are a major export item.
  • It is a Non-Aligned world dominated by human sophonts located in the Tsorva Subsector of Halcyon Sector.

System Data[edit]

Majanu-Haden System[edit]

The primary is Majanu, an ordinary red main sequence star. It has a luminosity of 0.04 Sols, a mass of 0.489 Sols, and a diameter of 764,000 km. (I) Haden orbits within the habitable zone and is designated the mainworld. (II) a standard atmosphere stormworld, (III) a ringed small gas giant, (IV) a vacuum iceworld, and (V) a small ice giant form the outer system. Many of the worlds retain satellites.

Schill Subsystem[edit]

The companion is Schill, a red subdwarf star. It has a luminosity of 0.0092 Sols, a mass of 0.144 Sols, and a diameter of 314,000 km. (I) a thin atmosphere radworld, (II) a vacuum worldlet, (III) a vacuum iceworld, and (IV) a small gas giant form the outer system. The gas giant retains satellites.

  • Majanu and Schill orbit their barycenter at a mean separation of 11.8 AU (1.76 billion km). They have an orbital period around one another of 51 years.

Isgard Subsystem[edit]

Isgard is a brown dwarf with a diameter of 60,000 km. It lies approximately 2900 AU from the two central stars and has an orbital period around them of 250,000 years. (I) a sparse icy planetoid belt, (II) a sparse icy planetoid belt, and (III) a vacuum worldlet form Isgard's outer system.

Mainworld Data[edit]

(I) Haden[edit]

(I) Haden is designated the mainworld. It orbits Majanu at a mean distance of 0.18 AU (26.9 million km), within the habitable zone. It has an orbital period of 39 days 21 hours: it is tidally locked to Majanu. The axial tilt is 12.5 degrees. Haden has a diameter of 6,752 km, a density of 7.13 g/cm³, and a surface gravity of 0.68 G. The world is geologically active. Its atmosphere is rated as Thin, Tainted, with a mean surface pressure of 0.45 bar and a composition of 81% nitrogen, 18% oxygen, and 1% argon, carbon dioxide, neon and other trace gases: the taint is caused by high levels of background radiation. Approximately 12% of the surface is covered in lakes of liquid water. Mean surface temperature: -22°C. The atmosphere is sluggish and slow weather systems, driven by the star, crawl across the globe. The climate is seasonal.

Satellite:[edit]

Haden retains a single natural satellite, a rocky vacuum moon named Jest:

(Ia) Jest (UWP G100000-0, orbiting at 14 Diameters/95,000 km)

Mainworld geography and topography[edit]

Total surface area: 143 million km², Land surface area: 126 million km², Water surface area: 17 million km². The major bodies of water are the Oval Sea, lying to the north of the equator, the Broken Sea, lying to the south, and large numbers of lakes: they are concentrated in low-lying terrain and are collectively known as the Depression Seas. They are surrounded by the Redactive Lands and Tangledwald forests. Much of Haden is arid and empty outback. The Broke Tooth mountains and the Shattered Lands dominate much of the southern hemisphere, the Voorlith mountains straddle the equator, and the Slashback mountains cover much of the northern hemisphere. The Great Dusty Basin, the Cold Desert, the Desert of Claims, and the Stripey Desert lie between the mountain chains.

Native lifeforms[edit]

Haden has extensive but primitive native life, entirely consisting of microscopic extremophile organisms able to live anywhere they can find sources of liquid water. Their metabolic functions drive the process of atmospheric renewal. The organisms exist in gigantic colonies and may be consumed by humans: huge quantities are cultivated in growing vats.

There are many introduced species surviving as isolated but stable ecosystems in different geographical regions. The most persistent introduced fauna is an extremely hardy spiny vine that grows in massive thickets (called Tangledwalds) in any area where it can find moisture. It is most prevalent around the Depression Seas, where it must be actively controlled to avoid it encroaching on the limited agricultural land. No non-indigenous species of fauna has a mass in excess of 1kg.

History & Background (Dossier)[edit]

No information yet available.

World starport[edit]

Haden has a Class C Starport, an average quality installation which includes amenities including unrefined fuel for starships, some brokerage services for passengers and cargo, and a variety of ship provisions. There is a shipyard capable of doing maintenance and other kinds of repair. Ports of this classification generally have only a downport, unless this is a trade port or system with an hostile environment mainworld.

World technology level[edit]

Haden possesses a Technology Level of TL–8.

  • Common Communication technologies for this TL include: Fiber optics, improved telephones, and satellite communication and data networks.
  • Common Power Generation technologies for this TL include: Improved geothermal and improved batteries.
  • Common Transportation technologies for this TL include:
    • Land: Advanced automobiles.
    • Water: Triphibians and early artificial gills.
    • Air: Improved helicopters and hypersonic jets.
    • Space: Space shuttles, early space stations, and improved interplanetary spacecraft (System Craft).

World government[edit]

Haden has a Balkanized Government. There is no central world government. The world has several governments competing for control of the world. These may be allies, cooperating, competitors, or at war with each other.

Haden is divided into two major power blocs:

  • Farmer nations, clustered around the Crater Seas
  • Backlander tribes, controlling traditional territories centered on oases and water sources in the worlds outback

World military[edit]

Various countries and nation-states maintain there own military formations. Haden Military Units detail these further.

World economy[edit]

  • Resources: C (Very abundant)
  • Labor: 8 (Hundreds of millions)
  • Infrastructure: 9 (Extensive)
  • Efficiency: −1 (Average)

Trade data[edit]

World demographics[edit]

Population 3,100,000,000.

Significant populations of the following sophont species are found on Haden:

  • Humaniti (Human races)
    • Solomani (Major Race): 3.1 billion (99.98% of the population), largely descended from opportunistic prospectors stranded on the world by the arrival of the Voyagers in 3730AD. They refer to themselves as Terrans.
      • 2.2 billion “Backlanders”, who inhabit the vast and arid outback of the world. They exist at an approximate TL of 6 and consider their origins to be Corolian.
      • 0.9 billion “Farmers”, who dwell in the cities and agricultural lands around Haden’s Crater Seas. They exist at an approximate TL of 8 and consider their origins to be Scybrian.
  • Native Non-Human Races:
    • Hoppers: 350,000 (0.01% of the population).
    • Esaran: 60,000 (less than 0.01% of the population).
    • Meroquan: 15,000 (less than 0.01% of the population).
    • Temelik: 7500 (less than 0.01% of the population).

Urbanization[edit]

UWP listing[edit]

Second Confederation (ca 2400AD): Haden D441523-6 He Ni Po

  • Mineral extraction, largely around the Crater Seas. There were riches just waiting to be taken and, despite the minimal environmental conditions, Haden saw a steady flow of immigrants seeking their fortunes.

Grand Ascendency (ca 3720AD): Haden C441896-7 He Po

  • "Haden Boom": large mineral finds are made in remote areas of the outback. Huge numbers of opportunist prospectors seeking lanthanum and other rare and valuable resources flock to the world. The population grows from 25 million to in excess of 100 million in just a few decades. Many of the new arrivals claim parcels of land in the deep backlands of the world. The old and long-settled agricultural communities around the Crater Seas grow rich providing supplies and services.

Post-Dark Age (ca 4800AD): Haden E441975-4 He Hi In Po

  • Factionalised nation-states and tribal groups in a near constant state of war over scarce water resources.

Pre-Scybrian Wars (ca 5250AD): Haden B44197A-7 He Hi In Po
