AXZ is an experimental nootropic, also known as zombie drug, which renders the victim susceptible to suggestions and control.

A 10mL dose of AXZ will result in mild hallucinations for several hours, though many can resist the worst effects. A 20mL dose renders the victim susceptible to commands, usually for the next 7 to 10 hours. A 30ml dose results in total mind control. The victim will do everything he is told and will do nothing without orders. The effect lasts three to four days. A 50ml dose results in permanent mind control (and brain damage), with no chance of recovery.

Alerene is a ultra-safe mild stimulant which will keep the subject alert and functioning for a full day. Repeated doses can extend the period of alertness for up to two weeks. The extended alertness defers the usual effects of sleep deprivation (exhaustion, focus, hallucinations) until the dose(s) wear off. Side effects of the drug include a build-up of toxic byproducts which can cause the subject to become seriously ill or die under repeated doses. An extended period of rest and normal body functions will clear these toxins in a few days after ceasing the doses.

Anagathics or Antiagathics are drugs which counteract the aging process. [1]. Anagathics are a mixture of several compounds that help prevent aging and prolong life in Humans and other sophonts. The drugs are a regimen of regular monthly doses. These drugs are both rare and expensive.

The regimen needs to be started during the Adult life stage, prior to the onset of age-related degeneration. The user may reach an age of 100 or more before seeing any age-related effects. It takes a while for the total effects of anagathics to be felt; it also takes a while for the effects of anagathics to totally go away. However, there are withdrawal effects from interrupting the supply of anagathics. Obviously, anagathics are most effective if they can be taken long-term without interruption. A continually interrupted supply can have devastating side-effects.

In medical terms, antiagathics are known to confer a form of biological immortality through the conference of a stable or decreasing rate of mortality from cellular senescence as a function of chronological age. In addition to the terms Anagathics and Antiagathics, the specific drugs are known as Anti-senescent or gerontological medications. Informally they are referred to as Anti-aging, Life extension, or Rejuvenator drugs.

Many cultures prior to the introduction of functioning Antiagathics have legends about the Elixir of life, a magical treatment which will grant extended or eternal life.

The cultural reaction to the availability of antiagathics varies widely. The general cost prohibits all but the richest from using it and allowing the elite to extend their period of dominance of government or corporations from a few decades to a century or more by forming a perpetual Gerontocracy. Some cultures view this as stability, while other reject anagathics as stagnation. Imperial society frowns on Nobles who use antiagathics, but does not otherwise ban or regulate them.

Prior to several TL–15 breakthroughs, anagathic treatments were assembled from organic compounds generated by life forms on many different worlds. Because the compounds were difficult to reproduce in a laboratory finding reliable sources for these materials was of great importance. Some of these sources were widely known, others were kept as tightly held secrets.

The following systems and worlds are known sources of anagathic materials:

Analgesics, first created at TL-6, are substances that minimize sensitivity to pain. They alleviate symptoms (as opposed to anesthetics, which completely block sensation), and are far more effective than painkillers. A wide variety of substances are used as analgesics and many commercial brands contain additional ingredients (such as caffeine) to improve their efficacy. Analgesics have a cost of Cr10 per dose.

Analgesics may be extremely addictive. An opine is a form of analgesic. An overdose of anesthetics will damage the function of internal organs, particularly the liver. A sufficiently large dose may result in liver failure and death.

Anesthetics, first created at TL–5, are substances that induce insensitivity to sensation. They completely block feelings of pain, pressure and touch, as opposed to painkillers or analgesics, which specifically block pain. A wide variety of substances are used as anesthetics. Anesthetics have a cost of Cr100 per administration.

A local anesthetic can completely deaden a particular body part, such as a tooth or a limb. A general anesthetic will render the patient unconscious and physically insensitive. An overdose of anesthetics will stop vital functions such as breathing and the heart, resulting in death.

Dustspice (Fteahrao) is a rare euphoric spice used for seasoning food, especially fruit. Harvested from the bark of the geki bush, a desert scrub-plant native to Romar (Spinward Marches 2140), this seasoning is popular with humans as a mild recreational spice with effects slighter than, but similar to, alcohol. Certain non-human races (notably Aslan and Vargr) find dustspice a much more powerful euphoric; it is in constant demand by those peoples.

Taste and effect varies with growing conditions and the dustspice from different worlds vary considerably in value. Dustspice from Romar is especially valuable to the Aslan. Among worlds other than Romar that are known for producing dustspice is Keanou (Spinward Marches 2411). Ftulrois, meanwhile, is the chief supplier of Dustspice for the Glorious Empire.

Variants[edit]

A variant, commonly called neo-dustspice, was recently created by accidental exposure to certain microbes found in the tainted atmosphere of Zugrora (Lishun 1914). It produces not only euphoria, but also a neurochemical imbalance in mammalian bodies that causes mild cravings. Imperial authorities have been studying the possibility of classifying neo-dustspice as a banned substance.

History[edit]

In 336, the pleasant taste and mild euphoric effect of the bark of the Geki Bush was noted by a Scout expedition to Romar (Spinward Marches 2140), which eventually led to the Dustspice Wars.

The Fast Drug is named because it makes the universe (to its user) appear to move much more quickly. [1] The drug slows down personal metabolism at a ratio of approximately 60 to 1. Fast drug takes effect immediately upon ingestion; one dose typically lasts for up to sixty days, making that time appear to be only one day.

The drug is administered via a dermal patch, attached directly to the skin of the patient. There are dosing regimens which last for shorter periods of time. In addition to the 60-day dose, there is a 30-day dose and one-week dose.

Users are extremely vulnerable because they are living at such a slow rate; but physical aging is also slowed, and the need for consumable supplies is reduced, thus allowing conservation of air and food. [2] This can be particularly useful when trapped on a ship without properly functional life support systems.

An antidote exists which cancels the effect remaining when taken. [3]

Many societies experiment with extremely low temperature baths to slow down metabolism and others artificially induce comas. By the TL:10-12 epoch, the fast drug has become ubiquitous and highly valued for survival or emergency applications. The Fast Drug Berth has become an alternative to Low Berths in some areas.

PDPT-beta is a chemical compound that serves as the basis for a family of experimental broad-spectrum antibiotics. The PDPT-beta based antibotics can be selectively "tuned" to wipe out specific types of bacterial, viral, or cancerous growths, while leaving adjacent benign growths untouched.

The compound was discovered by Seaharvester scientists in the corpse of a pre-reproductive phase daghasasi specimen in 1097, a creature native to Bellerophon (Solomani Rim 1519). The full name of the compound, Cis-1, 2 paradichloro-triethyl-aminopro-cyclohepa-trenyl-4-tricyclohexene-beta is rarely used. Thus far, no synthesis of the chemical has been produced, and no source other than the daghasasi oguls has been discovered.

Painkillers, first created at TL–4, are substances that reduce sensitivity to pain. They alleviate symptoms (as opposed to anesthetics, which completely block sensation), but are not as effective as analgesics. A wide variety of substances are used as painkillers and many commercial brands contain additional ingredients (such as caffeine) to improve their efficacy. Painkillers have a cost of Cr1 per dose.

Painkillers may be extremely addictive.

An overdose of painkillers will damage the function of internal organs, particularly the liver and the digestive system. A sufficiently large dose may result in organ failure and death.

The effects of Pediica Spice is to cause a rapid increase in brain activity while slowing down the metabolism to a crawl. Many users enter what appears to be a catatonic state, unable to move or respond to external stimuli. The parts of the brain that govern imagination, art, and abstract thought go into overdrive. The catatonia and hallucinations generally last for half an hour. Long term exposure to spice can lead to permanent addiction and catatonia.

Pediica spice derives from the metamorphosed shells of a crustacean native to Pediica (Dagudashaag 2938). The Shagahi crustacea filled the world's equatorial oceans and, on their deaths, dropped the to the sea floor. Over time, with the correct pressure and temperature, the chemical changes produce the hallucinogenic powder. Later geographic uplifts make these layers more accessable to mining.

Harvesting the spice is a difficult and time-consuming affair, made more complex because the drug is illegal on most worlds. Pediica itself is classified as a planetary war memorial, the mines closed, and access guarded by the Imperial Interstellar Scout Service. When available a gram packet sells for Cr1,000 and will provide two 'trips'.

Slow Drug

Size Various
Weight 3.0 grams
Per dose

Slow Drug is named because it makes the universe (from the viewpoint of the user) appear to move more slowly. In effect, the user lives at a much faster rate, approximately twice as fast as normal. [1]

When taken, slow drug takes effect after about 45 seconds, and continuing to function for around an hour. At the end of its effect, the user receives physiological damage to the nervous system as part of the drug's effects. In addition, the user is extremely fatigued; he or she is treated as if utterly exhausted and must recover from that fatigue. A person under the influence of slow drug, because he or she is living at twice the normal rate, is allowed nearly twice the reaction time available to normal individuals. The person can fire a weapon twice as quickly or move twice as far as normally. [2]

A medical slow drug is also available, being used to hasten recovery from wounds or illness. One dose causes unconsciousness, and the passage of thirty days equivalent time in one day. During this period, ordinary healing takes place. No wounds or physiological damage is received from the use of medical slow drug. Be certain to note the passage of time at the increased rate during period of drug use. [3]

A slow antidote drug is designed to restore the body's normal metabolism and rate of metabolic function. For some individuals habitually taking such drugs, resistance builds and function declines often causing severe bodily stress. Extreme caution is recommended for those regular taking metabolic altering drugs.

The Slow drug slows down the outside world allowing an individual to function at a much higher metabolic rate than normal. This also forces an individual to radically increase nutritional intake often forcing individuals to consume tens of thousands of calories or more within a single twenty-four hour period. Speeding up an individual’s metabolism and cognition can be very hard on the body and leave lasting physiological damage.
