Githiaski's seas teem with life, but forms analogous to vertebrates have never appeared; rather the dominant phylum has developed a supportive inner "cage" of gristle-like material. The Githiaskio's ancestors may have resembled those Terran marine worms which bury themselves in the seabed, leaving only a bundle of tentacles exposed; their closer relatives were certainly squid-like in external form.

Githiaski (Anta 2406) is a mineral-poor world on the fringe of the Lesser Rift; the First Imperium seems to have paid little attention to the world, for the intelligent inhabitants were only recently discovered by a merchant ship during the Long Night. Their name for their planet can best be represented as Llaaaiihoin (with a heavy vibrato on the first syllable, and a high pitch on the last). As the world has few, small continents mostly consisting of salt marshes and swamps, regular contact with the Githiaskio came only with the rise of the Third Imperium. As scientific study focussed on the race, their curious evolutionary history came to light.

Githiaski is governed by a Civil Service Bureaucracy. The leadership of the government is another form (democracy, dictatorship, oligarchy), but the bureaucracy leadership influences policy. The government leadership may select the bureaucracy leadership, but not its membership. Usually the governmental leadership is divided, or incapable of setting policy and the bureaucracy provides a stabilizing influence. The bureaucracy may be the full government bureaucracy or a section with limited jurisdiction but considerable influence like the military.

The Githiaskio have established a world government which is basically a federation of older, culture-based states. The representative assembly is, however, less influential than the bureaucratic elite, who descend from the agency set up to deal with offworlders in the wake of first contact.
