Mainworld Data

Mainworld Size (S)

Gabrael is a Meso World between 7,200km and 8,800km in diameter. The world has a standard gravity between 0.4G and 0.57G. The horizon will appear about 4km away. The planet is 7750km radius and 24350km circumference.
It has a gravity of 0.65G.
Day Length: 28 hours
Orbital Year: 198 days

Mainworld Atmosphere (A)

Gabrael has a pressure of 0.71 to 1.49 atmospheres. While a Standard Atmosphere does not require survival gear this atmosphere also contains an unusual taint such as such as disease, a hazardous gas mix, pollutants, or sulfur compounds which requires the use of a Filter Mask. Some taints may require more protective equipment. TL–3 or more advanced survival gear is required to settle this world. The atmosphere is tainted with the local equivalent of pollen which can cause an extremely unpleasant reaction when inhaled. The average temperature is 18 Celsius.[2]

Mainworld Hydrosphere (H)

Gabrael has 25-35% of its surface covered by liquid water. It has a few small seas. Wilderness refueling is possible. Water for the inhabitants will be recycled.

Mainworld Geography & Topography

Gabrael’s startown is named Tsabad[3]. It lies on the Gamago River and lies twenty kilometres from the starport, to which it is connected by gravitic lift rail[4]. Tsabad consists of a warehouse district, an urban core, and a corporate centre. The corporate centre includes a number of Gravitic buildings, the most notable of which is the Knaegu Ghouk[4]. The prestigious Esali College[4] is also located in the core of the town.

To the north of Tsabad (upstream on the Gamago) lies the town of Tenjann and (beyond Prisma Canyon, in the Benjacquin Highlands) is the small town of Feyr[5]. Feyr is the home of Hallin Products[3], a food processing firm, and the obscure Dreyla Standard Systems[3], a company dealing in robotics until the Abandonment.

Lifeforms

Fauna

No native fauna of Gabrael flies. All flying creatures on the world are imports (e.g. Chicken). n.b. The Flying Drynet, native to the eastern plains, glides rather than flies and cannot maintain or gain altitude.

The Muugagen Pigbird has gone feral and is now found wild on Gabrael.[2]

There has been an historic trade in Doyle’s Eel on Gabrael, but these creatures are illegal, dangerous and (probably) only being kept by limited specialist collectors.[6]

Flora

Nyflan's Fern[7] is a psionic plant that eliminates appetite in nearby creatures - thus ensuring the plant's safety - or just makes you feel happy. This is found in a number of poorer houses on Gabrael but is not native.

Calabaa Trees are grown in plantations on Gabrael and the resulting drink, "Calabaa", exported to the subsector.

Sensitive Umoth reacts badly to Human contact. The oils from the skin transferred during an unprotected human contact tend to cause the plant to die within a few days. Other varieties of Umoth don’t have this reaction.

History & Background (Dossier)

Imperial High (Landed) Nobility

Gabrael, as a member world of the Third Imperium has a member of the Imperial Nobility overseeing the world.

The Abandonment saw the Knight of Gabrael evacuated by the IN in 1135, leaving behind a seneschal to oversee the family interests.

World Starport

Summary

The starport's ability to build ships and boats was deliberately slighted as part of the Abandonment.
A series of Corsair raids reduced the port facilities further until the port beacons were generally turned off to avoid unwanted traffic. The starport is 20km from Tsabad and connected to it by monorail.[4]

1105

Gabrael has a Class A Starport, an excellent quality installation which includes all the expected amenities including refined fuel for starships, brokerage services for passengers and cargo, and a variety of ship provisions. There is a shipyard capable of doing annual maintenance, overhauls and other kinds of repair, and construction of both starships and non-starships. Most ports of this classification have both a Highport and a Downport.
This starport's highport is owned and operated by Ling Standard Products.
The highport pays very little tax to the Government of Gabrael, yet starport related income is still the major income for the planet.
The downport has minimal facilities, serving mainly as a transfer port for agricultural goods. Most craft based at the downport are Agricultural Haulage shuttles, with a few passenger and general cargo vessels[8].

1200

Gabrael does not have a starport. The Class X Starport is an indication that no starport exists in the system. There are no facilities or services available, and no site marked for landing.

The old Downport, 20km from the main city of Tsabad, was the site of several nuclear strikes as the Virus sought to eliminate the planets ability to support ships under Human/Vargr control. Ships with the appropriate information can contact the ground for landing instructions, and can get both life-support, very limited maintenance and fuel supplies. Ships without that information are considered hostile until proved otherwise.

The old Highport was placed at the L2 point (known colloquially as the Midnight Orbit) in 1136. It has solar power, and appears to be at least partially maintained by aging repair-bots.

World Technology Level

1105

Gabrael possesses a Technology Level of TL–12 or TL-C in Hexadecimal Notation.

1200

Gabrael possesses a Technology Level of TL–5.

World Government

Summary

n.b. There was no actual change of governmental structure between 1105 and 1200, the change was in where within that government the power resided. In 1105, the elected representatives in Parliament were in charge. By 1200, the technology committees of the Government wielded effective power.

1105

Gabrael is governed by a Representative Democracy where government leadership is representatives elected by eligible voters. What determines an eligible voter varies. The representatives determine policy, including selecting members of the bureaucracy. There can be referendum, votes by eligible voters on specific subjects.

1200

Gabrael is governed by a Feudal Technocracy. Society divides itself based on the technical requirements of the society. Each of these functions are granted as a fief to an individual or group. Leadership of these fiefs determines the head of the government.

World Law Level

Summary

The change of law level represented a reaction to the Virus and Red Pelts. The additional restrictions noted applied to non-residents.

1105

Gabrael has a moderate level with laws covering many areas of government and interaction. These laws are simple enough that most people can act as their own advocate, though for serious issues a professional is recommended. Law enforcement officials will be present, but not in great numbers. All firearms except shotguns, and anything more destructive, are typically regulated or prohibited.

1200

Gabrael has a high law level with laws covering many areas of interactions of people, corporations, and the government. A few worlds with this law level may be Amber Zones. Any interaction with the judicial system requires an Advocate trained in the local legal system. Law enforcement is present almost everywhere, either as people or via technology. Legal proceedings can take weeks to months to resolve and involve a dozen or more people. All blade weapons and firearms, and anything more destructive, are typically regulated or prohibited.

World Economy

Gabrael was the centre of a wide trade network across 4 sectors. The transport was not always owned by the planet's businesses, but the traders went to many places on many state's shipping lines. It was a non-industrial world.

Trade Data

Prior to the arrival of Virus, Lurent planetoid ships could be found (trading) in the inner system or (refuelling) in the system’s Oort clouds[9]. The ships slowly vanished in the years following the Abandonment

After the Abandonment, (and to the annoyance of the Regency), traders from the United Followers of Augurgh temporarily filled the transport vacuum created by the withdrawn Imperial shipping - until their state fell to Virus.

Agricultural Sector

Visitors could be forgiven for thinking that Gabrael has pretensions of being an Agricultural world but only a small area (near the starport and capital) is intensively farmed. This provides more than enough food for the population and for sale to/via the highport operators[10].

World Demographics

1105: Gabrael has a population of 1,000,000 sophonts (millions).

  • This is a Nonindustrial World, too small to support the complete chain of production of most goods from start to finish.

Approx 4,000,000

1200: Gabrael has a population of 1,000,000 sophonts (millions).

  • This is a Nonindustrial World, too small to support the complete chain of production of most goods from start to finish.

Approx 1,000,000

World Culture

Gabrael is renowned for its level of social equality: Vargr are very comfortable relating with Imperial humans. Many enter professions where the two races interact.

Even after the Abandonment, Aekhu Vargr originating from Gabrael were often found on both sides of the border - from the Spinward Marches to Vland.

Until the Abandonment there were a small number of Droyne working on the Planet[3], but this was not their permanent residence - this was not a Droyne world.

On Gabrael, it is considered polite to bring a gift to any prospective employer.[2]

The high-class women on Gabrael tend to employ Contract Fathers when looking for children. [11]

Urbanization

Tsabad is the starport for Gabrael and over 99% of the population live within 500km in 1105.
A deliberate policy of rural dispersal was applied after the Abandonment.

Architecture

The architecture of Gabrael includes internal over-pressure using filtered air and air-lock style doors.

The centre of Tsabad included floating offices, but these were landed and slowly scrapped as part of the Abandonment
