Fylora is a pre-agricultural and nonindustrial world lacking adequate development for its economy to become prosperous.

  • As a nonindustrial world, it requires extensive imports of outside technology to maintain a modern, star-faring society. The need to import most manufactured and high technology goods drives the price of these goods up in the open market.
  • It is a Non-Aligned world dominated by human sophonts located in the Nisor Subsector of Far Home Sector.

System Data

Kearsage-Fylora System

The primary is Kearsage, an ordinary orange main sequence star. It has a luminosity of 0.42 Sols, a mass of 0.825 Sols, and a diameter of 1.263 million km. The inner system consists of (I) a trace atmosphere inner world, and (II) a corrosive atmosphere inferno world. (III) Fylora orbits within the habitable zone and is designated the mainworld. (IV) a thin atmosphere hospitable world, (V) a small gas giant, (VI) an exotic atmosphere bigworld, (VII) a sparse icy planetoid belt, (VIII) a ringed large gas giant, (IX) a small ice giant, and (X) a sparse icy planetoid belt form the outer system. Many of the worlds retain satellites.

Mainworld Data

(III) Fylora

(III) Fylora is designated the mainworld. It orbits Kearsage at a mean distance of 0.65 AU (97.2 million km), within the habitable zone. It has an orbital period of 210 days 18 hours and a rotation period of 23 hours. The axial tilt is 22 degrees. Fylora has a diameter of 8,237 km, a density of 4.97 g/cm³, and a surface gravity of 0.58 G. The world is geologically active. Its atmosphere is rated as Standard, Tainted, with a mean surface pressure of 0.79 bar and a composition of 78% nitrogen (N2), 21% oxygen (O2), and 1% argon (Ar), water vapor (H2O), carbon dioxide (CO2), neon (Ne) and other trace gases. The taint is caused by allergenic spores and pollens of organic origin. Approximately 49% of the surface is covered in seas of liquid water: average tidal ranges exceed 0.25m. Mean surface temperature: 17°C. The climate is rated as Temperate-Prime and experiences minor seasonal changes during the local year. The atmosphere is active and moderate weather systems driven by the star and the seas work across the globe.

Satellite

Fylora retains a single natural satellite, a vacuum worldlet named Krass:

(IIIa) Krass (UWP Y100000-0, orbiting at 20 Diameters/165,000 km)

Mainworld Geography and Topography

Total surface area: 213 million km², Land surface area: 108 million km², Water surface area: 105 million km².

Native Lifeforms

Kearsage-Fylora System

Fylora, the mainworld, has extensive, abundant native life, with complex organisms inhabiting every ecological niche. Their metabolic functions drive the process of atmospheric renewal.

The cold marginally hospitable world lying in orbital position (IV) (within the H+ region of the outer system) has primitive native life, consisting entirely of microscopic cyanobacteria-parallels that exist in any location where they can find even a minimal trace of shelter and warmth. Their metabolic functions maintain the process of atmospheric renewal.

No other world in the system is known to have native life.

History & Background (Dossier)

A scattered assortment of crude domed polar ice cities with carefully tended hot houses adorn the northern hemisphere. Thick riveted steel beams and durable double panes of polarized boro-silicate glass struggle to keep the harshest elements at bay. Caravans of long rail lines link these outposts to the equatorial Starport hub. Along the equator there are six fertile city-states connected by a complex network of canals. This permits over burdened cargo barges to ply their trade. After much fighting and long sieges between warring city-states a truce and eventual compact between the noble houses formed the current status quo. A cease-fire in some respects, no house has dared to openly violate the peace. The depleted population haunts the ruins of some of the more technologically looted spires. Walled coastal enclaves host majestic trade galleons that interface between tiny resort and research colonies which dot the misty archipelagos of the shallow seas. Hand built by artisan craftsmen, these intricately decorated vessels sport brilliantly colorful sails proclaiming dynastic alliances of oath sworn loyalties. They are meticulously maintained and passed down within clan families as prized, often irreplaceable treasure. Most local construction and manufacturing is laborious and time consuming. The lack of large scale talented labor pools drives up costs on finished goods. Ancient Hopper genetic modifications to their human charges render most natives resistant to the local atmospheric taint. Creche born humans tend toward a tall willowy appearance and a reclusive demeanor. Turbans, elaborate head wraps, veils and masks persist. An openly displayed face, especially among military aged males is a grave insult which could provoke a duel with blades to decide matters of honor. Agricultural combines tend massive sunlit grow vats of spirulina as it serves as the predominate food staple. Subsistence green protein gruel as a local cuisine is almost entirely reviled by off-worlders. Oligarch nobles from each group serve on the senate of the world council to debate matters of planetary policy. Customs of hunting and safari are completely alien and unknown among the natives. When they were first afforded the opportunity to travel off world to crowded worlds with riotous ecosystems filled with the songs and cries of sibilant wildlife it was reported as deeply disturbing to these early explorer natives, more accustomed to their quiet lonely world.

World starport

Fylora has a Class D Starport, a poor quality installation which has few of the expected amenities. There is unrefined fuel for starships and a limited variety of ship provisions. There is no shipyard of any kind, but there may be parts and technical support for doing minor services and repair. Ports of this classification generally consist of only a downport, unless this is a trade port or system with an hostile environment mainworld.

World technology level

Fylora possesses a Technology Level of TL–4.

World government

Fylora is governed by Self-Perpetuating Oligarchy. A single family or small group provides the leadership and important positions in the government. These positions are inherited by member of the group or their family members. The organization may be monarchy, with titles passed to family members. Or a plutocracy where inheritance of the family fortune includes government position. Or the organization may be more typical organization with positions of power inherited.

World military

One city-state, Helios Prime, compensates for its relative lack of troop strength by fielding an elite fleet of thirteen lighter than air sky craft. Made more effective by the thick atmosphere relative to the low surface gravity. Typically a small volley of incendiary rockets, followed by rapid fire gatling guns can swept enemy decks. Then dashing boarding parties equipped with patriotically colored weapon harnesses, loincloths and armed with revolvers and cutlasses can swing over on grappling cables to cripple enemy rigging. Shotguns are also popular for repelling this type of boarding action. Higher altitude dirigibles, are held in strategic reserve as deterrents to open warfare among the scattered clusters of survivors. These vessels are the pride of each polities' fleet and serve as carriers to flights of lightly built, spun fungus fiber cloth, glider borne assault troops. They can swept in with spears and a few long rifles for specially trained NCO marksmen to seize vital railheads, ports, bridges, and critical enemy infrastructure. Tiny raids and skirmishes occasionally flare up as houses jockey for position and influence among byzantine court intrigue. Company and platoon sized airborne commando raids between elite units of local special forces are the largest threshold for operations permitted. Spies and individual poison equipped assassins are more common to settle matters of state.
