The Motor Carriage is a Railroad Vehicle. It requires a railroad network of the correct gauge to operate.

Description / Specifications

The Motor Carriage is a combination locomotive / passenger carriage. It is typically used to carry commuters in urban areas.

Hull / Suspension

An enclosed box-shaped hull constructed from steel.

  • Length: 19.5m, Width: 3.1m, Height: 3.8m.
  • Overall Volume: approximately 230m³ (16.5 dTons).
  • Unloaded Weight: 42,700 kg.

The overall volume measures the vehicles maximum dimensions and includes track clearance. The enclosed volume of the hull is lower.

The vehicle is fitted with wheels mounted in motorised trucks.

  • The vehicle is designed to operate on rail networks. The gauge (the distance between the inner faces of the two rails) for railroad networks within the Distant Fringe is generally 1.5m and most examples of the Motor Carriage are built to match that standard.

Power / Transmission

A medium internal combustion power plant using hydrocarbon fuel, which in turn powers electric motors built into the trucks. The fuel is contained within a protected internal tank.

Performance

  • Cruise Speed: 55 kph, Top Speed: 75 kph. Performance is identical in forward and reverse.
  • Range: 400 km at Cruise Speed, 350 km at Top Speed.

The Motor Carriage can tow a small train of passenger carriages. Locomotive and wagons use an automatic coupling system. The linkage also includes pressure hoses that are connected to the towed wagons and operate their brakes.

  • Maximum towing weight is approximately 105,000 kg. Greater loads may be moved but this places stresses on the Motor Carriage that may cause a catastrophic loss of control.
  • Two or more Motor Carriages may work together in order to move larger trains of passenger carriages.

Passengers / Cargo

An enclosed compartment fitted with clear windows and with a volume of 115m³ (8.2 dTons), of which approximately 21m³ (1.5 dTons) is given over to machinery and the crew compartment. The driver's position is equipped with basic mechanical controls. A console provides information such as temperature and forward velocity.

There is seating for 32 passengers, along with a central walkway and a small fresher. The seating is relatively cramped. The vehicle has basic environmental protection (the hull is weatherproof but is not sealed) and is fitted with interior lights and heaters. The passenger compartment is accessed by an end door.

  • Cargo Storage: 10m³ (0.7 dTons), consisting of a luggage storage area and overhead luggage racks.
  • Maximum Load: 7,100 kg (including passengers).
    • Maximum Gross Weight: 47,500 kg.

Equipment

Headlights and running lights, and a steam whistle. Motor Carriages may be fitted with animal fenders.

History / Background

A railroad locomotive designed for small scale logistical operations. Locomotives of this type often have a distinctive livery.

The Motor Carriage can serve as a stand-alone unit or act as a locomotive towing larger trains. A typical combination is four Passenger Carriages with a Motor Carriage at either end.
