Uploading Files (2016-18)

I know there used to be a way to do this, but I've not been able to find out how. some help would be appreciated. Ssteve (talk) 12:23, 28 February 2016 (EST)

The page for that is Special:Upload, though it looks to be currently locked to administrators only. 77topaz (talk) 21:20, 2 March 2016 (EST)

The Special:Upload page is available to users that have a confirmed email address too. This is a spam prevention measure. Tjoneslo (talk) 22:45, 1 April 2016 (EDT)

That page still appears to be locked for admin use only...Ssteve (talk) 10:59, 2 January 2018 (EST)

You have not confirmed your email address. Go to your Preferences page (see link at top right of page). Toward the bottom of the User Profile page is an "Email Options" section. There should be a link to either (re-)confirm you email address or allow you to change it. The system sends you an email to that address as asks you click a link. Because of this it may end up in a spam folder. Once you do this you should have access to the Upload Files. And this turns off some of the CAPTCHA requests for making changes to the articles. Thanks; and now how to figure out how to include the pic that I uploaded to the article... any hints or help? Ssteve (talk) 14:57, 2 January 2018 (EST)

Thomas, would you please share your resources and advice for picture sizes and whatnot? I think we can all learn from your best practices.

... as well as hints on how to re-size the pics wouldn't hurt... Ssteve (talk) 15:05, 2 January 2018 (EST)

I've found that pictures between 200 and 300 pixels wide works best for the infoboxes. You can go up to 400px wide for other pictures in the articles. But too much larger and they dominate the whole article. Smaller is OK if they don't have much detail.

For resizing pictures I've found most anything works. Microsoft Paint, and whatever the newer picture editor in windows works OK. I've also used Gimp (the OSS photoshop replacement), and a resize picture online web service.

Inserting a picture into an article requires adding it as a link: [[File: <name.jpg>]]: See full help here: https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Help:Images

NOTE: There is a 2MB upload limit on files (images and PDFs). This is a limit underlying the whole system and can not be changed. If you find you want to upload a larger image/PDF please let me know. Tjoneslo (talk) 15:12, 2 January 2018 (EST)
