In a discussion with Rob Eaglestone and Jim Kundert, they requested a way to revive the occasionally requested Canon review project for articles. This is a suggestion for the technical process of marking articles as reviewed once the review is completed. There will be a second discussion about the review process itself.

The core change required by the reviewer would be to add a "reviewed" parameter to the Template:Sources to mark the article as reviewed. Example:

{{Sources
 |reviewed = ~~~~~
 |S1={{Ludography cite|name=Journal of the Travellers' Aid Society 24|page=17|article=Religion in the Two Thousand Worlds}}
 |S2= [[Traveller Wiki Editorial Team]]
}}

The five "~" are expanded to a date and time stamp by the process of saving the changes to the page. Adding the parameter has three effects:

  1. A "Category:Articles reviewed in YYYY" added to the article. Having a category which allows generating a list of reviewed articles and a quick way of seeing when the article was last reviewed.
  2. The border color on the Sources template (the grey box at the end of the article) will change. Currently it is a thin black line, it will be updated to a thicker grey line. And the reviewed articles will have a nice blue border.
  3. The text at the top of the box will have appended the text "This article was reviewed at

The "Unreviewed" article:

This article was copied or excerpted from the following copyrighted sources and used under license from Far Future Enterprises or by permission of the author.

The "Reviewed" article:

This article was copied or excerpted from the following copyrighted sources and used under license from Far Future Enterprises or by permission of the author. This article was reviewed at 20:02, 22 October 2019 (EDT).

Other changes[edit]

Because the Sources template is used in literally every single article, making updates to it can cause overload to the system. So if we make the above change I also want to make a change which would eliminate the use of then "S1", "S2", ... parameters. The citations would simply appear in the order they appear as the parameters in the template:

{{Sources
 |{{Ludography cite|name=Journal of the Travellers' Aid Society 24|page=17|article=Religion in the Two Thousand Worlds}}
 |[[Traveller Wiki Editorial Team]]
}}

This would have no visual change in the way the Sources box is rendered. This is only for ease of use for the editors. But is addresses the confusion about using the "SNN=" parameters. When adding a new source reference, renumbering all the parameters is a pain, sometimes not done not correctly and we end up having missing sources or duplicates. There was also a request to have these numbered so the editor can match the ordering. This eliminates both problems.

This would not replace the existing use but would extend the template to accept both. Tjoneslo (talk) 20:02, 22 October 2019 (EDT)
