An Extant Species is a lifeform which is still around. Live members of its species can be encountered throughout Charted Space.

The term Extant Species and its corollary Extinct Species is used to describe the following lifeforms:
- Non-Sophonts or Creatures at TL-Negative
- Proto-Sophonts at TL-0
- Sophonts at TL-1 or higher (...typically capping at TL-33)
