Some proponents of turning the Third Imperium into an Imperial Republic have proposed that the ruling monarch be elected by the Imperial Moot instead of inheriting the Iridium Throne, particularly the Moot's Republican Faction. He or she would be limited to 10 to 30 years in office. There has been a debate whether the elected monarch should retain the title of Emperor or Empress, or receive an alternate title like First Citizen.
