The Echo class Patrol Torpedo Boat is a warship.
- It is a military ship and a System Defense Boat.
Description (Specifications)
The Echo class is a class of Tarkan System Defense Boat.
- The class is currently operated by the Global Securities Division.
- The vessel was locally designed.
- It was typically crewed by humans.
- It was a TL–8 design.
General Description
The first prototype of the winning bid from a local subsidiary of Meridian Aerospace was locally engineered and built at the Tarkan Electric Boat Yards (TEBY). This class of patrol torpedo boat was designed to be as fast and maneuverable as local technology would allow. Three obsolete metal-cooled, fast breeder fission reactors are mated to a powerful Peckurd Halls-Allison 5G maneuver drive. The engine is fitted with twin fast recharge electro-magneto capacitor banks, to facilitate rapid initializing and ignition sequences from cold starts. The lead engineer, typically referred to as chief or master chief in the local parlance, and the subordinate drive hand, must carefully monitor this high-performance power and drive system to maintain optimal reliability under combat conditions. The drives are finicky and require extra maintenance to preserve high G performance.
A thick and resilient lamellar composite armored hull was selected for protection and durability. Built with help from Spinward Metallworks with a compact, modular fuel cell and a streamlined cone hull structure with stable atmospheric handling properties which was selected for maximum flexibility. This streamlining and twin fuel scoop system allows for wilderness refueling and an agile, dual environment engagement envelope. Fitted with two integral, lateral hardpoints and armed with twin triple torpedo tubes which are capable of independent target acquisition and tracking. Paradyne Systems consulted on upgrades for the Mark IX torpedoes which are currently deployed to redress low yield warhead concerns with earlier models in the series. The cargo hold is typically fitted as a dedicated missile magazine to support sustained fire power. A single Ensign or Junior Lieutenant will skipper these boats. Deployed in patrol flotillas of twelve boats tasked with intercepts and interdiction of hostile shipping, they carry a mercenary boarding party. These mercenaries are equipped for protected forces operations. They must qualify and be rated for maneuvers and combat in zero G necessary to breach uncooperative hulls.
A model 2 fib computer is fitted adjacent to the bridge and across from the centralized fire control stations. The two gunners coordinate sensors and targeting solutions and direct fire missions remotely. Plans for a fail-over backup merchant/commercial business grade 2 bis computer were scrapped to free up space for more crew and armor. The medic aboard, invariably nick-named “Doc”, if often pressed into service in the tiny galley and mess nook which features cramped seating for four. They are also often seen as back up damage control when electronics and mechanically certified mercenaries are not available. The officer’s full-sized stateroom will often double as a wardroom and media lounge with the repurposed briefing console.
The Echo class is a warship has a fully streamlined cone hull and is fitted with fuel scoops allowing it to perform wilderness gas giant or hydrosphere refueling. The class has enough internal fuel for 4 weeks. Its performance is rated at (5-G) acceleration and is considered excellent.
- It carries no subcraft or ship's vehicles.
Basic Ship Characteristics
Following the Imperial Navy and IISS Universal Ship Profile and data, additional information is presented in the format shown here. The small craft factor indicates the number of squadrons (...of ten subcraft) carried on the ship. Tonnage on the universal ship profile is shown in kilotons (...thousands of tons) where necessary. ---|---|---|
No. | Category | Remarks |
1. | Tonnage / Hull | The Echo class is constructed using a 200 dTon hull built in a conical configuration. The hull is fully streamlined and has good atmospheric capability: its atmospheric handling characteristics are reliant on its onboard gravitic systems.
|
2. | Crew | x14 personnel.
Accommodations
Accessible areas of the hull are fitted with grav plates and inertial compensators and have full life support and environmental systems.
|
3. | Performance | The vessel mounts a Maneuver-5 drive, and a fusion Power Plant-5, giving performance of 5-G acceleration. The ship has an agility rating of 5. The internal fuel tankage gives the power plant 4 weeks of endurance.
|
4. | Electronics | Adjacent to the bridge is a Model/2 fib computer. The vessel does not have a backup computer.
The vessel is fitted with communications equipment, a sophisticated sensor array, and has an avionics suite.
|
5. | Hardpoints | x2 hardpoints.
|
6. | Armament | The normal weapons fit-out for the Echo class is:
x2 triple missile turrets, grouped into two factor 2 batteries.
|
7. | Defenses | The hull is plated, braced and structurally reinforced. It has an armor rating of 7.
|
8. | Craft | The vessel carries no subcraft or ship's vehicles. |
9. | Fuel Treatment | The vessel has internal fuel tankage of 10 dTons.
|
10. | Cost | The basic cost of the vessel is MCr243.45 |
11. | Construction Time | 32 weeks to build, 26 weeks in quantity.
|
12. | Comments | The vessel has a 2dton cargo hold. |
History & Background (Dossier)
The Echo class are constructed around a fully streamlined cone-shaped hull clad in thick hull armor. Lengthy production delays forced the contractors to pull in extra construction facilities. The Frogal-Higgins Yacht Works were prevailed upon to assist for an undisclosed inducement on short notice. Several vessels in the production run feature non-military spec adornments, rare woods and top end designer accents customary on pleasure yachts and not found on spartan military craft. The patriotic production team just repurposed excess stock they had on hand. The joke was chandeliers were optional. A 300dTon version was under consideration which had an additional hardpoint and turreted, dual 250MW gravimetrically focused pulse lasers, but it never made it past the simulation and trials level. The loss of speed and agility was considered unacceptable. It was later discovered that during high G maneuvers deep in the atmospheres of gas giants, gravity well shear caused fractures in interior structural support moorings. Internal bracings had to be refitted with expansion couplings to permit greater hull flexibility to better tolerate the compressional forces with the thick rigidly armored hull.
A single flotilla of twelve craft have been deployed by a mercenary unit at the behest of the Eternals of Tarkan (world).
Class Naming Practice/s & Peculiarities
Vessel Peculiarities:
The class lack interface subcraft and modest cargo holds, meaning they require dedicated logistic support and frequent reprovisioning.
Class Naming Practice/s:
Vessels use the alphanumeric designations common to other designs of the region. Crews often adopt a more familiar "callsign" name.
