Description (Specifications)[edit]

Formed around Dzarrvaer (Provence 0225) in the mid-1090s, the Dzarrgh Federate is a typical Vargr government. The Federate incorporates many long-independent worlds, allowing them a high degree of autonomy. Most member worlds pay no taxes to the capital, and no unified judicial system exists. Some political scientists have gone so far as to call the Federate a geographical region rather than a governmental body.

The Federate was initially an Imperial trading partner, and relations between the two governments has long been friendly. Even when it was invading the Corridor Sector it still maintained trading links with the Imperium via the United Followers of Augurgh even while its own Corsairs were preying on those routes.

History & Background (Dossier)[edit]

Overlapping the border between Provence and Tuglikki Sectors, the Dzarrgh Federate was formed in 1090. The same factors that drove the Dzarrgh Federate's formation were also at work elsewhere and it's neighbour, the United Followers of Augurgh (UFA) formed at the same time. The Federate pushed outward from Dzarrvaer over the next six years. Many of the surrounding worlds had been independent since the collapse of the Foergaz Coalition in -2530. These worlds initially resisted, but the ideals and might of Federate forces eventually won out. Since that time, the Federate's expansionistic desires seem to have gradually slacked off. While there was competition with the UFA for influence over worlds, this competition didn't flare into actual war. The UFA had negotiated a defensive alliance with the Windhorn Pact of Two and the Dzarrgh Federate was too powerful for the UFA to attack alone.

Corridor Expansion[edit]

Following the withdrawal of the Corridor Fleet in 1117, the Federate could not resist the potential for loot. If it invaded it would face the Imperial backlash; if it didn't it would fall to those who rushed in to fill the power vacuum.

It reached an agreement with the Irrgh Manifest, and defined areas of influence in the Khouth and Ian Subsectors which split both down the middle. It then swept in, securing its flanks by occupying worlds in Million and Atsah Subsectors. The Duke of Atsah could not permit this and ordered the Imperial Navy in those Subsectors to resist. This resulted in a running battle across the border of the Deneb and Corridor Sectors.

The news that there was a catastrophic Virus on the loose frightened the Regency and caused it to negotiate a ceasefire and (mostly) demilitarised zone between the two polities while it stripped the Million Subsector and others in preparation. This took the pressure off the Federate who sought to consolidate their position in Corridor Sector - Just in time for the fabled Virus to sweep in in the late-1130s (The first attack was in 1137) and early-1140s, resulting in the Federates ultimate destruction as an interstellar polity.

The Red Pelts Suedzuk Vargr Corsairs passed through the ruins of the Dzarrgh Federate in the early 1140s before their meteoric rise in the Deneb Sector and (equally meteoric) fall at the hands of the Regency Navy's 61st Fleet.

The Dzarrgh Federate's populations were destroyed or struck bargains with the Virus or just hunkered down and hid. No interstellar polity with federate roots survived.

Government & Politics (Leadership)[edit]

The Federate is really a government in name only. Each member world exercises a high degree of autonomy: there is no state legal system, no single currency, and little taxation on an interstellar level. Thus, the Federate incorporates many different cultures and lacks true continuity. Each member world has retained its pre-Federate customs from the old days of independence.

Technology & Trade (Economy)[edit]

The highest Tech Level of the Federate is E and is found at Dzaerrvaer (Provence 0225) and at Tuerrg (Provence 0428). None of the worlds conquered gave the polity the technology boost it hoped for, although the capture of Aerfor and its Research Station in 1120 might have helped had there been time to exploit the facility's potential.

Military & Intelligence (Force Projection)[edit]

No information yet available. The Dzarrgh Federate is split by a jump-3 rift between it's core worlds and the outliers on the Imperial border. This limited the amount of force that could be deployed against the Imperium under normal circumstances as passage of the more frequent jump-2 corsairs tended to be deflected to Trailing via the Irrgh Manifest or to Spinward into the neutral United Followers of Augurgh.

Corridor Expansion[edit]

With the withdrawal of the Corridor Fleets, the presence of a power vacuum gave the Federate the opportunity to negotiate passage for lesser-jump ships via the Irrgh Manifest. The Federate then managed to deploy it's navy into that gap - but only just had enough regular ships to provide a minimal cover for the hordes to looters that came with it. The flood of corsairs eager to strike into the Imperium were aimed via the Atsah Subsector until the start of the Abandonment when a neutral-zone was temporarily established. This zone was subject to renewed pressure in the late 1130's as certain groups (reinforced by groups fleeing from further up-Corridor started to flee the reality of the Virus. The collapse/subversion of the Federate from attacks by Virus transformed those attacks after 1139.
