Durant is a low population, fluidic hellworld of less than 10,000 sophonts struggling to survive in a inhospitable environment.
- A fluid world has an oceanic geography of a liquid other than water such as ammonia, methane, hydrocarbons, or other exotic liquids.
- Hellworlds often offer daily, and sometimes hourly, life-threatening situations to their inhabitants.
- It is a Non-Aligned world dominated by human sophonts located in the Ras Tennol Subsector of Far Home Sector.
Astrography and Planetology
This star system is detailed using the Fringian Variant System Description.
- The Durant system lies on the edge of the Demon's Eye Rift.
- The supergiant primary of the Demon's Eye system and the huge Demon's Eye Nebula that surrounds it, lying a few parsecs to spinward-rimward, are clearly visible in the sky.

System Data
Orsell-Durant System
The primary is Orsell, a dim red main sequence star. It has a luminosity of 0.004 Sols, a mass of 0.273 Sols, and a diameter of 414,000 km. (I-I) a vacuum worldlet, (I-II) an exotic atmosphere stormworld, (II-I) a sparse icy planetoid belt, (II-II) a ringed small gas giant, (III) Durant, designated the mainworld, (IV) a small ice giant, (V) a ringed large gas giant, and (VI) a small gas giant, form the outer system.
Mainworld Data
(III) Durant
(III) Durant is designated the mainworld. It orbits Orsell at a mean distance of 0.77 AU (115.2 million km), within the outer system. It has an orbital period of 1 year 107 days and a rotation period of 16 hours. The axial tilt is 6 degrees. Durant has a diameter of 9,809 km, a density of 5.13 g/cm³, and a surface gravity of 0.72 G. The world is geologically active. Its atmosphere is rated as Exotic, with a mean surface pressure of 4.45 bar and a composition of 86% nitrogen (N2), 9% carbon dioxide (CO2), 4% methane (CH4), and 1% argon (Ar), water vapor (H2O), abiotic oxygen (O2), azane (NH3), neon (Ne) and other trace gases. The world experiences relatively high levels of background radiation: emission rates exceed 2 rads per hour. Approximately 16% of the surface is covered in lakes and seas of liquid nitrogen: average tidal ranges exceed 0.1m. Mean surface temperature: -155°C. The climate is rated as Frigid and is static, with no seasonal changes during the local year. The atmosphere is active and strong weather systems driven by the star surge across the globe.
Mainworld Geography and Topography
Total surface area: 302 million km², Land surface area: 254 million km², Fluid surface area: 48 million km².
Native Lifeforms
Orsell-Durant System
No world in the system is known to have native life.
History & Background (Dossier)
- Rumors persist of strange slimes and oozes which appear from pools of strange chemicals and devour work teams and their vehicles.
- Survey teams doubt a carbon based ecosystem is possible here.
World starport
Durant has a Class D Starport, a poor quality installation which has few of the expected amenities. There is unrefined fuel for starships and a limited variety of ship provisions. There is no shipyard of any kind, but there may be parts and technical support for doing minor services and repair. Ports of this classification generally consist of only a downport, unless this is a trade port or system with an hostile environment mainworld.
World technology level
Durant possesses a Technology Level of TL–7.
- Common Communication technologies for this TL include: Early video and early satellite communication networks.
- Common Power Generation technologies for this TL include: Early fuel cells, solar energy, and geothermal power sources.
- Common Transportation technologies for this TL include:
- Land: Improved automobiles, hovercraft, and bullet trains.
- Water: Hydrofoils and early triphibians.
- Air: Hang gliders and supersonic jets.
- Space: Deep space probes and interplanetary spacecraft (System Craft).
World government
Durant is governed by a Feudal Technocracy. Society divides itself based on the technical requirements of the society. Each of these functions are granted as a fief to an individual or group. Leadership of these fiefs determines the head of the government.
