Dhaen is an agricultural, nonindustrial world still lacking adequate means to expand its economy.
- As an agricultural world, this world is a near-ideal environment for producing quality foodstuffs of plant, animal, and other forms. Quality foodstuffs are a major export commodity for this world.
- It requires extensive imports of outside technology to maintain a modern, star-faring society. Having to import most manufactured and high tech goods drives the price up for these items at this world.
- It is a Non-Aligned world dominated by Vargr sophonts located in the Anghikh Subsector of Provence Sector.
- This world-system hosts a Naval Base, usually associated with military starships, which may be located on or off-world.
- It is the homeworld of the Dhaen.
Description (Astrography & Planetology)[edit]
Dhaen has a solitary primary star.
- It is a turbulent white subgiant.

System Data[edit]
The worlds of the system have been surveyed. They consist of:
- The mainworld.
- x5 secondary rocky worlds.
- x5 gas giants.
The system contains 5 gas giants and 5 other small worlds. The innermost gas giant (orbiting at 0.2 AU) is directly heated by the central star to over 1100K and should not be used for wilderness refuelling. The outermost world is in retrograde orbit and there is no substantial Oort cloud. It has been posited that the system was, at one time (at least 2 billion years previously), part of a binary system that was split apart by the close approach of another star.
Mainworld Data[edit]
Mainworld Size (S)[edit]
Dhaen is a Meso World between 7,200km and 8,800km in diameter. The world has a standard gravity between 0.4G and 0.57G. The horizon will appear about 4km away.
Mainworld Atmosphere (A)[edit]
Dhaen has a pressure of 0.71 to 1.49 atmospheres. While a Standard Atmosphere does not require survival gear this atmosphere also contains an unusual taint such as such as disease, a hazardous gas mix, pollutants, or sulfur compounds which requires the use of a Filter Mask. Some taints may require more protective equipment. TL–3 or more advanced survival gear is required to settle this world.
The atmosphere is tainted with relatively high levels of Nitrogen Oxide (NO). Substantial CO2 deposits appear at each pole over autumn/winter and sublimate each spring. Thus CO2 levels in the atmosphere can vary considerably. Pollens from local Flora can also appear in the atmosphere in considerable quantities at temperatures over 5 Celsius and these can have psycho-chemical effects on Vargr and Human physiologies.
Surface temperature at the equator varies between -50 and +15 Celsius. It is anticipated that the temperature of the world will increase substantially over the coming millennia as the central star moves through the AGB branch of its lifecycle.
Mainworld Hydrosphere (H)[edit]
Dhaen has 75-85% of its surface covered by liquid water with a few large continents and extensive islands. Wilderness refueling is possible.
Mainworld Geography and Topography[edit]
A map of Dhaen, the nominated mainworld of the system, showing major bodies of water, large landmasses, major highland regions, and the polar icecaps.
- Far more detailed maps are available locally.
- Verified updated charts are constantly sought.
- Detailed survey data commands premium prices.
This planet's name literally means "icy" in Old Arrghoun and its modern derivitive Aekhu. It is indeed a cold world. It is one of several mainworlds in Vargr space to have the word daen as at least part of its name.
Native Lifeforms[edit]
Abundant, diverse native life filling every available ecological niche. Its metabolic functions drive the process of atmospheric renewal.
Flora[edit]
Flora falls into two categories:[2]
- That which grows in the brief summer season and dies off over winter
- That which grows in the brief summer season and hibernates over winter
Fauna[edit]
Includes many species of megafauna (creatures with mean body masses in excess of 10,000 kg).[2]
Much of the Fauna migrates to follow the sun, or Hibernates over winter. Some operate at varying levels of metabolism from a manic-phase to full hibernation; others with a smaller range of metabolic rates.
Intelligent Life[edit]
History & Background (Dossier)[edit]
World Starport (St)[edit]
Dhaen has a Class B Starport, a good quality installation which includes all the expected amenities including refined fuel for starships, brokerage services for passengers and cargo, and a variety of ship provisions. There is a shipyard capable of doing annual maintenance, overhauls and most kinds of repair, and construction of non-starships. Most ports of this classification have both a Highport and a Downport.
- The world is host to a Vargr Naval Base.
- The boatyard on Dhaen is more of an artisan craft workshop than an industrial scale affair. The quality of its craft is high and the boats sell well.
World Population (P)[edit]
Dhaen has a population of 8,000,000 sophonts (millions).
- This is a Nonindustrial World, too small to support the complete chain of production of most goods from start to finish.
- The official population entirely consists of Vargr.
- The Dhaen are not recognised as Sophonts by the inhabitants of the planet and some castes are traded as pets/slaves.[2].
Demographics[edit]
- 65% of the population are Aekhu Vargr.
- 30% of the population are Logaksu Vargr.
- 5% of the population are other Vargr.
- Dhaen are not counted toward the population.[2]
Urbanization[edit]
The Vargr are over 90% concentrated at the starport.
The Dhaen live in small communities made up of mixed-caste-groups of 150-300.[2].
World Technology Level (T)[edit]
Dhaen possesses a Technology Level of TL–10 or TL-A in Hexadecimal Notation.
- Common Communication technologies for this TL include: Holovision, Personal Global Communications, and advanced Translators.
- Common Power Generation technologies for this TL include: Increasingly advanced fusion plants and advanced fuel cells.
- Common Transportation technologies for this TL include:
- Land & Water: Grav belts and maturing gravcraft.
- Air: Greatly improved hybrid grav-aircraft.
- Space: Improved interplanetary spacecraft (System Craft).
- FTL: Jump Drive-1.
World Government (G)[edit]
Dhaen is governed by a Representative Democracy where government leadership is representatives elected by eligible voters. What determines an eligible voter varies. The representatives determine policy, including selecting members of the bureaucracy. There can be referendum, votes by eligible voters on specific subjects.
World Military[edit]
The Vargr have a single regular infantry battalion, but the community is heavily armed and independently minded.
World Law (L)[edit]
Dhaen has a low law level. There are few laws, covering only important areas. There may be few or no law enforcement officers, the expectation is citizens will bring law breakers to the attention of the Judicial system. Legal proceedings will be fast, with few people involved. For interactions outside of the framework of the laws, cultural norms dominate. Machine guns, other automatic weapons, portable energy weapons, and other military weapons, body pistols, explosives, and poison gas are typically regulated or prohibited.
Trade Data[edit]
- Importance: 2 (ordinary)
The world is famous (or infamous) for the trade in Dhaen.[2].
World Economy[edit]
- Resources: D (very abundant)
- Labor: 5 (hundreds of thousands)
- Infrastructure: 6 (limited)
- Efficiency: -1 (average)
World Culture[edit]
- Heterogenity: 3 (monolithic)
- Acceptance: 8 (friendly)
- Strangeness: 2 (typical)
- Symbols: 7 (somewhat concrete)
World Timeline[2][edit]
Major events that have affected this world and the wider region that it lies within:
- ca -3,000,000: the system's star first becomes a subgiant. Environmental conditions change on all its orbiting worlds.
- -300,000: The sudden appearance of a complete ecology on the mainworld, including proto-Dhaen.
- ca -250,000: The Ancients were active within the sector, transplanting the Vargr onto Lair.
- ca -100,000: Dhaen form tool-using communities.
- ca -30,000: Dhaen form recognisable farming settlements
- -9235: the Vilani discover jump technology. A few explorers and settlers begin to pioneer the region.
- -4045 to -2204: the Ziru Sirka claims a few rimward worlds and establishes a firm border. The Windhorn Rift and the absence of any significant Mains discourages large-scale Vilani expansion into the region.
- -3810: the Vargr discover jump technology and begin an era of expansion.
- -2400s: Vargr raiding into human-dominated areas significantly increases. This becomes known as the Vargr Pillaging.
- ca -2350: the Foergaz Coalition, an early polity, collapses.
- ca -1700: Vargr rimward expansion gradually ceases: the border between human and Vargr space stabilizes.
- -1776 to 0: the Long Night. There is widespread regression within the area and some worlds become barren.
- The Year 0: to rimward-trailing, the Third Imperium is founded.
- circa 26: the Empire of Varroerth is founded.
- early 100s: the Contract of Taarskoerzn is founded.
- 200s: The Dhaen are "discovered" by the Vargr. Their culture is TL–1 or perhaps (marginally) TL–2.
- 284: Goldrush. First trade in Dhaen "servants" established.
- 300-420: the Imperial First Survey charts the system.
- early 400s: the Irrgh Manifest is founded: it absorbs the Contract of Taarskoerzn.
- mid 500s: the Knokseng Confederation is founded.
- 777: the Lair Protectorate is established.
- 869: the Glory of Taarskoerzn is founded. It splits the Irrgh Manifest.
- 995-1065: the Imperial Second Survey charts the polity.
- 1065: the Second Survey is published. Information about the polity becomes widely available.
- 1090: the Dzarrgh Federate is formed.
- 1095: Faarzgaen extremists capture a number of worlds and secede from the Empire of Varroerth. They declare a Jihad against neighbouring worlds.
- 1096: the Province of Llaeghskath secedes from the Empire of Varroerth, becoming the Llaeghskath Interacterate.
