Cutting the Ties is a historical term commemorating the Last Armada’s deliberate destruction of all astrographic charts and data relating to the route back to Terra.
Much of this data had been gathered during the Five Year Missions. It was an intensely symbolic act, emphasising the Last Armada’s total separation from the homeworld. It is likely, however, that the Armada’s leadership secretly retained copies of the data.
The events surrounding Cutting the Ties are recorded in the Zelig Journal, a document that survives from the time.
