Description (Specifications)

The Corona Regnum is an interstellar, multi-system government located in Kaa G!'kul Sector, Extolian Sector, and Leonidae Sector that claims a long history stretching back to the Rule of Man.

-2199 to 1130 A client state on the coreward-most edge (a "stretched" state reaching around to the spinward edge) of the Hive Federation.

History & Background (Dossier)

The Corona Regnum claims to have been founded during the Second Imperium and with its assistance, though this is quietly doubted by outside historians other than the Hivers. Much smaller at its founding, this Second Imperial client state would, according to its own published histories and some Hiver sources, form a critical diplomatic balance point which (along with the Hiver-K'kree War) would see the halt of coreward Hiver expansion. It is this unique role which accounts for the similarly unique distribution of the Regnum's star systems. Also, these ties to the Rule of Man account for the relatively advanced tech level of this distant Imperial client state.

Later Hiver authors would attribute this move as the first external manipulation of Hiver society. It is for this reason that Hivers call the Corona Regnum the first of the Five Curiosities.

What is less widely known is that the Regnum has faded and resurged several times since its founding, leaving the modern (1120) Regnum with little or no real connection to the legendary state of the Hiver-K'kree War.

The Corona is more accurately described as one of the earliest Terran Cultural Regions beyond the reaches of the three Imperiums. It is all that remains of a larger region of Terran (or Solomani, as they were slowly becoming at the time) settlement in Hiver influenced space. Arriving in the same region within a few decades of the disenfranchised Lishun Suugugki, the Terran's expedition wasted no time in settling widely but thinly across a region encompassing much of a four subsector area, encountering the proto-Federation Hiver communities of Extolian Sector approximately 80 years prior to contact with the advancing K'kree. When the K'kree Crusades entered the region and went to war with the Hivers, the reactions among the worlds of the Terrans were mixed. Some disliked the Hivers enough to decline their requests for aid, or wanted to play the two sides against each other for longer term goals, while others contribute what they could to the war effort. Once the War was resolved, the new Hiver Federation absorbed many of the Terran worlds willingly (according to available records), while most of the Terran settled worlds farther spinward and coreward declined the invitation. Not interested in another war so soon, the Hivers did not press the matter, and the "Corona" of unabsorbed worlds was recognized as such.

The worlds of the Corona have spent most of the subsequent 2700 years as independent systems or clusters of two to four allied systems. A reportedly zealous response to K'kree probes during the Long Night era, circa -1550, led to the first declared Corona Regnum, as the systems of the Corona united to stand against the larger threat. While records of this era are now spotty, historians agree that the first Regnum lasted roughly two centuries before collapsing in on itself. By that time the K'kree of the region had fully turned inwards and were not a significant threat beyond their borders.

The legends of the Regnum would awaken in -740 when other ex-patriot Human states in Numbis Sector (also known as Kaa G!'kul Sector ) began to expand and conquer, causing the Regnum to reform as a defensive act. Within thirty years the Regnum had repulsed attempts on its territory and was conquering systems outside of the traditional Corona. By the time another three generations had passed, the fires of conquest had faded across much of the sector, and the Regnum began to fade again. It would take until circa -510 for the second Regnum to collapse, once again under its own weight.

A brief Third Regnum was declared in Imperial year 224, but did not survive the death in fleet battle of its founder only eight years later. The worlds of the Corona have been largely independent since.

In 1114, a series of poorly timed Hiver and K'kree "diplomatic overtures" to worlds in the Corona near the K'kree border caused a ripple effect of panic, resolve, and reunification. The K'kree seized three systems in lightning raids in 1117 and 1118, and made unveiled threats toward several other worlds. The Corona reacted, and a fourth Corona Regnum rose in 1119. Still unsettled in 1120, the fourth Regnum is building for war, but is not yet certain who that war will be with.
