Description

The Corona Arc, located in Kaa G!'kul Sector, Extolian Sector, Numbis Sector, and Leonidae Sector claims a long history stretching back to the Rule of Man, as one of the earliest Terran Cultural Regions beyond the reaches of the three Imperiums. The region began as a thinly settled, roughly spherical zone of Terran colonies, many of which were incorporated into the newly forming Hive Federation. The remainder, in a rare show of unity, threatened the Hivers with violence if assimilation was attempted. The threat apparently worked, as the Hivers left the coreward and spinward parts of the Terran colonial region alone, effectively ending Hiver political expansion in that region.

History

Arriving in the same region within a few decades of the disenfranchised Lishun Suugugki, a broad Terran expedition wasted no time in settling widely but thinly across a region encompassing much of a four subsector area, encountering the proto-Federation Hiver communities of Extolian Sector approximately 80 years prior to contact with the advancing K'kree. When the K'kree Crusades entered the region and went to war with the Hivers, the reactions among the worlds of the Terrans were mixed. Some disliked the Hivers enough to decline their requests for aid, or wanted to play the two sides against each other for longer term goals, while others contribute what they could to the war effort. Once the War was resolved, the new Hiver Federation absorbed many of the Terran worlds willingly (according to available records), while most of the Terran settled worlds farther spinward and coreward loudly declined the invitation. Not interested in another war so soon, the Hivers did not press the matter, and the "Corona" of unabsorbed worlds was recognized as such.

The worlds of the Corona have spent most of the subsequent 2700 years as independent systems or clusters of two to four allied systems. A reportedly zealous response to K'kree probes during the Long Night era, circa -1550, led to the first declared Corona Regnum, as the systems of the Corona Arc united to stand against the larger threat. While records of this era are now spotty, historians agree that the first Regnum lasted roughly two centuries before collapsing in on itself. By that time the K'kree of the region had fully turned inwards and were not a significant threat beyond their borders.

Culture

The Arc began as a fairly homogeneous cultural region, settled as it was from a small subset of Terran polities drawn predominantly from the sailing cultures of the Mediterranean. Different degrees of contact with their Hiver and/or K'kree neighbors, as well as the pressures of successful colonization efforts on a variety of worlds, quickly differentiated the worlds of the Arc. Later arrivals to spinward and coreward and the creation of colonies of their own further served to make the inhabitants of the Corona Arc distinct, though they retain a common pride in being "first" in the region and hold far more reverence for the Terra their histories describe than is typical.

Species and Ethnicity

The Arc is overwhelmingly Human of Terran descent, but within that limitation is fairly diverse. With the effects of many new suns to live under adding additional variation, the Human worlds of the Corona are home to Humans of all shapes, sizes, and "ethnic" variations. The coreward and trailing parts of the Arc also have significant Vilani blood, as the Lishun Suugugki and other Imperial expats flowed into Numbis Sector both before and after the Corona colonists.

The non-Human sophonts of the region are largely migrants or visitors. While there are non-Human sophonts native to the Arc, they are, by inclination or otherwise, not particularly important to the Arc.
