(c.-5400 to -4015): Consolidation Wars

Description (Specifications)

Many barbarians used their Vilani-derived technology in ways that clashed with Vilani law and custom.

  • They made unapproved innovations, failed to pay royalties to the shangarim, or built small interstellar empires that openly resisted Vilani influence. Over time, the Vilani became dissatisfied with this situation and shifted their strategy. Once they had explored the galaxy as peaceful merchants; now they marshaled war fleets and proceeded to unite all of known space under their direct rule.
  • Despite the dispersal of advanced technology among the barbarian races, the Vilani still had a considerable technological edge. Indeed, shortly before the Consolidation Wars began, Vilani researchers had developed the jump-2 drive, giving Vilani ships an unprecedented advantage in strategic speed and mobility.

History & Background (Dossier)

The Vilani were growing increasingly concerned by the activities of other races using Vilani-derived jump drive. Incidents such as the -5572 "chastisement" of the Ziadd and the loss (circa -5420) of a new jump-2 battle fleet in Ley Sector that embarrassed the Vilani before the Luriani they had been aiming to impress, made their insecurity more pronounced.

At the beginning of the Consolidation Wars era, the shangarim were already organized to provide governmental services within their respective spheres of influence. Indeed, each of them already operated an armed fleet in order to protect merchant convoys from barbarian or renegade attack. It was natural for each of the three shangarim to be given the responsibility for conquering and ruling a specific region of barbarian space.

Rimward

The Sharurshid organization was the shangarim responsible for expanding Vilani control to rimward – toward distant Terra.

  • Sharurshid’s ultimate goal was the Vegan Polity, a small interstellar state that had been established using Geonee-derived jump technology. As far as anyone knew, there were no starfaring races to rimward of the Vegan colonial sphere. Once the Vegans were part of the Vilani empire, expansion in that direction could safely be halted. The Vilani conquered and colonized methodically to rimward, finally making direct contact with the Vegan Polity about -4440. A Vilani military colony was established on Shulgiasu, which later became the center of Vilani civilization on the Rim. A few decades later, the Vegan Consolidation Campaign was kicked off with a surprise attack on several Vegan outposts. The conquest of the Vegan Polity took only a few years to complete, and was over by -4395.
  • After the Vegan conquest, the Vilani continued to expand to rimward and spinward, following a jump-1 “main” that trailed out into uncharted space beyond the Vegan sphere. However, the main effort of the Consolidation Wars went elsewhere, and colonization in the rimward direction was very slow. The Kushuggi or “Rim Worlds” province soon became a backwater of the growing empire.

Event Timeline

  • Circa -5400: The Consolidation Wars begin. The Suerrat of Ilelish Sector are targeted early on.
  • The Dishaan race's propensity for chaos means they are also one of the first races to be attacked.
    • It takes 80 years of war to finally break the Dishaan.
  • Meanwhile, to prevent a repeat of the Bhunj Exclusion, the Bhunj of Fornast are repressed.
  • -5,288: Considerable diplomatic tensions arise between the Vilani provincial governor at Mimu and the Phylum Kiaskui of the S'mrii. The result is a Consolidation War known also as the Laashuurarir (or Courtesy) War.
    • The S’mrii rapidly try to arm their merchant vessels but are no match for the Vilani Grand Fleet.
  • Circa -5100: The Vilani move on the Geonee of Massilia Sector. The Geonee Confederation fights the Two Hundred Years War.
  • Circa -4900: The Geonee are defeated and their worlds incorporated into the new Vilani Imperium.
  • Circa -4700: The Consolidation Wars come to Ley Sector and the Gateway region. Small raids and scouting missions have previously taken place, but no major campaign.
  • -4582: The Vilani decide to terminate a Luriani military buildup and launch the Luriani Consolidation Campaign.
  • -4547: After a surprisingly lengthy resistance, the Luriani surrender with the fall of Daramm.
  • -4450: Sharurshid establishes an advanced base at Shulgiasu.
  • Circa -4440: Sharurshid finally makes direct contact with the Vegan Polity.
  • -4395: Conquest of the Vegan Polity is complete.
  • -4100: Most of the far-flung Geonee colonies have been depopulated and resettled by Vilani colonists. Nevertheless, Geonee communities survive on at least 30 worlds in Massilia Sector.

Worlds & Sectors (Astrography)

This event primarily took place in the following areas:
Charted Space

  • Dagudashaag Sector: The S'mrii conquered and repressed, in the Laashuurarir (Courtesy) War.
  • Fornast Sector: The Bhunj returned to overt client status and their economic endeavours restricted.
  • Ilelish Sector: The Suerrat conquered and repressed.
  • Ley Sector: The Luriani conquered (after a surprisingly lengthy resistance) and repressed. Uniquely, the repression contrasts with normal Vilani procedure in that records are systematically destroyed. Society on Daramm collapses in the aftermath of what Luriani will later call the Year of Woe.
  • Lishun Sector: Jgd-il-Jagd worlds are interdicted and the Jgd prevented from expanding any further. The government of Jagd is informed of the interdiction; realizing that a massacre is in the offing if they attempt to resist, they instead accept and content themselves with what they have.
  • Massilia Sector: The Geonee conquered and repressed. Many Geonee colonists deported to their core worlds.
  • Solomani Rim Sector: The Vegans conquered and repressed; destruction of civilization on Muan Issler convinces Muan Gwi to surrender.
  • Zarushagar Sector: Dishaan interstellar hegemony dismantled and Dishaan people placed under strict Vilani supervision. Darmine region conquered and repressed.
