A Collector is a technological device and a power source.

• It is a kind of Ship Equipment.

Description (Specifications)

Collectors are energy-gathering and storage devices designed to accumulate energy. The term has been historically used to describe two similar, but different devices:

1. Stellar Collectors gather energy from the electromagnetic emissions of a star and store them in a bank of charge accumulators.
2. Particle Collectors absorb exotic particles from free space and store them in a collector-canopy for exclusive use by use by Jump Drive mechanisms.

Collector Observations

One known example of the Stellar Collector type mentioned above has the following characteristics:

• "[The canopy of the Stellar Collector] is ... a skeleton framework and a circular thin black radiation-absorbent film about one kilometer in diameter."
• "[The] Stellar Collector absorbs and collects energy for internal power and jump drives."
• "The collector-canopy collects radiated stellar power and stores it in the accumulators on the drive deck.
• Accumulators can typically store enough energy to power the jump drive(s) once, as well as maintain internal life support under normal conditions.
• Duration of internal power [for this particular example]: 60 days under ordinary load.
• Required recharge time: One to six weeks, depending on the distance from, and spectral type of the star serving as the radiation source."

History & Background (Dossier)

Collectors of various types become available much earlier than the TL-14 mark at which point they become commercially viable and competitive in terms of performance with other power sources available to starships and other technological devices.
