The rank of Captain (O6) is the most senior commissioned officer before one reaches flag-rank in the Imperial Navy.

Description (Specifications)

The Captain would expect to command a Battleship or equivalent line unit or have similar levels of responsibility as a staff officer. Appointment to this rank will cause the individual to rise to the level of social distinction of an Imperial Gentleman in Imperial Society by default should he not already be of a more prestigious background personally. History & Background (Dossier)

The term "captain" derives from "katepánō" (Greek: κατεπάνω, lit. "[the one] placed at the top", or "the topmost"), which was used as title for a senior Byzantine military rank and office. The word was Latinized as capetanus/catepan, and its meaning seems to have merged with that of the late Latin "capitaneus" (which derives from the classical Latin word "caput", meaning head). This hybridized term gave rise to the Anglic term "captain" and its equivalents in other languages.
