The star Capella (otherwise known as Alpha Aurigae) is a quaternary star system composed of two binary pairs. Capella is a member of the Hyades Moving Group.

Description

Capella is a quaternary star system composed of two binary pairs.

The Capella A pair is composed of two yellow-orange giant stars Capella Aa (a K0 III star whose corona is an x-ray emission source) and Capella Ab (a slightly less massive G1 III star). They are separated from one another by 0.76AU and are characterized by an orbital period of about 104 days about one another. The Capella A system has been classified as an RS Canum Venaticorum type variable.

The Capella B pair lies approximately 10,000AU from Capella A, and is composed of two pinkish-orange "red dwarf" main sequence stars called Capella Ba (also known as "Capella H") and Capella Bb (also known as "Capella L") that orbit each other approximately once every 400 years.

The Capella star system lies approximately 13.1pc from Terra, and is located in a Rimspinward/Spinward direction from Terra at bearing 162.6o Galactic Longitude and +04.6o North Galactic Latitude.

History and Background

Capella is the primary star of the world Capella (Solomani Rim 1440).
